What Causes Yeast Infections in Dog Paws, and When Should You See a Vet?

Yeast can normally live on a dog’s skin. A paw “yeast infection” develops when yeast—often Malassezia pachydermatis—overgrows or triggers inflammation, sometimes alongside an underlying problem such as allergies. Licking, redness, odor, or darkened skin can fit yeast dermatitis, but those signs do not confirm it: several other paw conditions look similar. Persistent paw changes call for veterinary advice; severe swelling, a serious wound, inability to bear weight, or signs of a severe allergic reaction need urgent care.

What causes yeast infections in dog paws?

Malassezia pachydermatis is a yeast that normally lives on canine skin. Disease can occur when changes in the skin or immune control allow it to multiply abnormally, or when a dog has a strong inflammatory response to the yeast. Its presence alone does not mean a dog has an infection.

Possible contributors include oily skin, seborrhea, allergic skin disease, immune deficiency, immunosuppressive medication such as corticosteroids, and sensitivity to yeast. These factors do not apply to every dog. Persistent licking can also irritate the skin and keep it moist, and more than one condition may be involved.

VCA Animal Hospitals states that yeast dermatitis is not contagious. A dog’s paw symptoms should still be assessed because other causes may need different treatment.

What does yeast on a dog’s paws look like?

Yeast dermatitis may cause itchy, red skin; a musty odor; flaky or crusty areas; thickened or darkened skin; hair loss; and licking or chewing. The skin around the feet or claws may become discolored. Some affected dogs also have recurring ear problems.

These signs are clues, not a diagnosis. Pododermatitis means paw inflammation; it describes what is happening, not what caused it. Possible causes include:

Whether one paw or several are affected, and where the lesions appear, may help a veterinarian narrow the possibilities. Those patterns are not reliable home tests for yeast.

Why does my dog keep licking their paws?

Licking is a sign of discomfort, not proof of a yeast infection. It can accompany yeast, allergies, other infections, parasites, injury, irritant contact, or other paw disease. Repeated licking can further irritate the skin and add moisture, potentially complicating the original problem. If licking persists or you can see a change in the paw, contact your veterinarian rather than relying on appearance alone to choose a treatment.

How a veterinarian checks whether it is yeast or something else

The veterinarian considers the history and examines the paws, then selects tests according to what the skin looks like and which causes are suspected. For yeast, testing may include skin cytology using a scraping, impression smear, swab, or tape preparation. Other evaluations can include skin scrapings or hair plucks. Depending on the case, the veterinarian may recommend bacterial or fungal culture, biopsy, blood and urine tests, a food trial, or imaging.

Confirming yeast in an affected area helps distinguish it from lookalike conditions and gives the veterinarian a way to assess response to treatment. A useful appointment history includes:

How treatment is chosen—and why symptoms may return

Treatment depends on the diagnosis, location, severity, and persistence of the problem. For confirmed yeast dermatitis, a veterinarian may recommend a topical antifungal product for a suitable case. The World Association for Veterinary Dermatology’s 2020 consensus guideline reports strong evidence for a shampoo containing 2% miconazole and 2% chlorhexidine used twice weekly for canine Malassezia dermatitis, where appropriate and locally available. This evidence supports a treatment option for selected cases; it does not mean every red or itchy paw should be treated with a retail shampoo. The veterinarian should select the product, schedule, and duration, especially for paw-localized symptoms or irritated skin.

Oral antifungal medication may be considered for more severe, chronic, or persistent cases. These medicines can have side effects, including liver effects; VCA notes that routine blood tests may be recommended during extended courses. Do not start or change an oral treatment without veterinary direction.

If allergies or another skin disorder are contributing, treating yeast alone may not prevent the problem from returning. The underlying condition also needs attention. VCA reports that dogs with severe skin allergies may develop recurrent secondary yeast or bacterial skin infections “two or three times a year”; that figure applies to this described group, not to dogs generally.

When should I take my dog to the vet for paw licking?

Arrange veterinary advice for persistent licking or chewing, redness, odor, swelling, sores, hair loss, discharge, bleeding, or signs of pain. Seek urgent veterinary evaluation for severe or rapidly increasing swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, a deep wound or puncture, a burned-looking paw, inability to stand or bear weight, or suspected exposure to a toxic chemical.

Facial swelling, widespread hives, vomiting, or collapse can signal a serious allergic reaction. Collapse or trouble breathing is an emergency. These are symptom-based triage recommendations from a veterinary hospital, not a universal timeline for every case.
