Choose the pet whose known needs fit your household’s everyday life—not simply the one who makes the strongest first impression. Before you go, consider your schedule, space, activity level, household members, resident pets, and care budget. At the event, share that picture with staff, ask what they know about each animal, and treat a brief meeting as one observation—not a guarantee of how the pet will behave at home.
How do I know if a shelter pet is right for me?
Start with the life you can reliably provide. A pet’s daily exercise, play, supervision, grooming, training, and medical needs should fit the time and resources your household actually has. A quiet apartment, a busy family home, and a household with other animals may suit different pets; no single temperament or age is best for everyone.
Before the event, agree on household must-haves and deal-breakers. Think about how much activity and noise you can manage, how much time you can spend with a pet, the space available, and what you can budget for routine and unexpected care. Include everyone who will regularly share the home, along with resident animals. If you rent or live in a building with pet rules, check those requirements first.
It can help to describe the kind of interaction you prefer—outgoing or reserved, playful or calm, independent or people-oriented. Treat these as preferences to discuss with staff, not promises about an animal’s future behavior. ASPCA guidance recommends choosing a dog with your lifestyle in mind, while Best Friends’ cat checklist encourages adopters to consider what care and environment a cat will need: ASPCA dog adoption guidance and Best Friends’ cat adoption checklist.

What should I ask before adopting a dog or cat?
Ask staff or a foster caregiver what they know about the animal’s history, day-to-day behavior, and care needs. Be specific, and ask whether an answer comes from direct observation, a previous caregiver, or information that is still unknown.
- How has the pet behaved around children, other animals, visitors, or frequent animal contacts?
- What exercise, play, enrichment, supervision, grooming, or training might the pet need?
- Are there known medical needs, medications, or behavioral concerns? What information is available, and what remains uncertain?
- How does the pet tend to respond in settings beyond this event, if staff or a foster caregiver has observed that?
- What changes or adjustment needs should we anticipate at home, and who can we contact with questions after adoption?
A missing history is not proof that a pet will or will not behave a particular way. Best Friends’ guidance on rehoming and adoption encourages sharing relevant information to support a good match: Best Friends’ rehoming guidance and Best Friends’ adoption advice.

How much can a brief meeting at an adoption event tell me?
A meeting gives you useful information about how the pet responds in that moment, but an event is unfamiliar and may be noisy, crowded, or distracting. A pet that seems shy or excitable there may respond differently in a quieter setting or after settling into a home. Avoid treating one interaction as a definitive behavior test.
The ASPCA cautions that shelter-dog behavior assessments and socialization can be affected by conditions and by the people observing the dog. Best Friends similarly notes that cats may not show their full personalities in a shelter. See the ASPCA position statement on shelter-dog behavior assessments and Best Friends’ cat checklist.

Use staff’s observations as helpful context, not certainty about what the pet will be like at home. As Best Friends cat expert Samantha Bell puts it: “Every cat is an individual. You can have two kittens who do all the same kitten things, raised in the same household, and as they mature, one can become more shy and the other more outgoing. Cats are who they are despite us.”
Should I bring my other pet to meet an adoptable pet?
Ask the organization before bringing a resident pet. Event policies and the best way to handle an introduction vary, and a crowded event area is not a good place to force contact. If an introduction is appropriate, ask staff how they want it handled and whether they can arrange a calm, controlled meeting.

| Fit question | What to consider or ask |
|---|---|
| Daily activity and time | What exercise, play, supervision, or enrichment may the pet need, and can your household provide it? |
| Household compatibility | What is known about the pet with children, resident pets, visitors, or frequent animal contacts? |
| Social style and energy | Is the pet observed to be outgoing, reserved, vocal, playful, calm, or independent? What is not yet known? |
| Age and adjustment | Would your household be ready for a kitten’s or puppy’s care and energy needs, or might an adult pet suit you better? How much transition time can you allow? |
| Ongoing care and cost | What medical care, training, grooming, food, and unexpected costs should you plan for? |
| Event logistics | Can you meet the event’s eligibility, documentation, leash, carrier, and transport requirements? |
What should I check before going to the event?
Event details and requirements differ by organization and may change. Check the specific event’s current instructions for hours, available animals, eligibility, required documents, and whether children or resident pets should attend. The ASPCA Mobile Adoption Unit, for example, asks adopters to bring current government-issued identification and household information, and requires adopted cats and kittens to leave in a secure carrier. Those are that program’s instructions, not universal adoption-event rules: ASPCA Mobile Adoption Unit information.
If you may adopt a cat, confirm whether you need to bring a secure carrier. A cat carrier requirement is specific to the organization; the ASPCA Mobile Adoption Unit page is one example, not a rule for every event. For a dog, check the event’s leash or transport instructions instead of assuming which equipment to bring.
Quick Recap
What should I do after choosing a pet?
- Read the adoption paperwork. Follow the organization’s instructions for medical care, transport, and the transition home, and confirm whom to contact with post-adoption questions.
- Prepare a quiet place to settle. Set up a safe area and secure doors, windows, and household hazards. Ask the organization what setup makes sense for this pet.
- Have basic supplies ready. ASPCA dog guidance lists items such as a leash, harness, collar, bed, toys, and treats. Its general adoption tips also mention bowls and a litter box for a cat. Confirm the pet’s needs with the organization: ASPCA dog adoption guidance and ASPCA adoption tips.
- Allow time to adjust. A pet’s response at an event cannot tell you exactly how quickly it will settle at home. Follow the organization’s transition guidance and ask for help if questions arise.
