Introduce an adopted dog to resident pets gradually: give the newcomer a quiet place to settle, then use controlled, supervised meetings tailored to the other animal. For another dog, start with short leash walks in neutral territory. For a cat, begin with scent and barrier-based familiarity, and preserve a dog-free refuge. Let the animals’ behavior—not a fixed calendar—determine when to pause or progress.
Prepare the home before the first meeting
Set up a quiet, safe space where the adopted dog can rest without being approached by resident pets. Keep the first days calm, establish predictable routines, and allow the dog to observe household life at its own pace. The ASPCA’s Adoption Tips advises: “Don’t force interactions with people or other pets.”
If you have a cat, make sure the cat has a comfortable area the dog cannot enter. A closed room works; a secure gate can help manage access where appropriate. VCA advises letting the new dog explore and adjust to the cat’s scent before attempting an introduction, and recommends safe rotation of access when needed. A crate may be one suitable option for a dog’s rest or separation, but it is not required or appropriate for every dog.
Introducing the adopted dog to a resident dog
Start with a neutral-ground walk
Meet outside the home or in another neutral place, with one handler for each dog and both dogs on leash. Begin far enough apart that they can stay comfortable. Walk in the same direction, allowing them to notice one another without requiring a greeting. Sniffing and exploring while ignoring the other dog is a perfectly acceptable start.

VCA recommends multiple sessions before the dogs live together. Keep early walks short if either dog needs a break, and separate them afterward so they can rest. Reward calm, appropriate behavior. If either dog shows fear, anxiety, distress, or aggression, increase distance or end the session; do not push them closer to meet a timetable. If you are concerned that a dog cannot tolerate another dog nearby, seek guidance from a qualified animal behavior professional.
Reduce competition inside the home
Before the dogs share indoor space, put away valued toys and bones. Feed them in separate rooms. Food, resting places, possessions, territory, and owner attention can all become sources of competition or social stress, according to VCA’s dog-introduction guidance. Avoid creating a high-arousal encounter around a particularly valuable or unfamiliar item.

Introducing the adopted dog to a resident cat
Build familiarity through a barrier
Keep the dog leashed and use a secure barrier, such as a baby gate or screen, for visual introductions. Let the cat decide whether to approach; it should be able to retreat to its dog-free area at any time. Keep sessions calm and brief enough that both animals remain comfortable.
If the animals show little interest in one another, VCA suggests feeding them at a comfortable distance on opposite sides of the barrier, then separating them afterward. When they appear neutral—with no lunging or hissing—you can consider supervised leash sessions in an open room. Follow the cat’s pace rather than carrying it toward the dog or blocking its retreat. See VCA’s guidance on introducing a dog to a cat.

Manage the risk of chasing
A calm meeting while the cat is stationary does not establish that the dog is safe around a moving cat. VCA identifies a moving cat as a frequent trigger for chasing. Keep supervising and managing access as the cat moves freely, and maintain a dog-free refuge and a clear retreat route for the cat.
Supervise, pause, and progress by behavior
Stay close enough to intervene during early interactions. A leash, gate, or crate can help manage space, but none replaces active supervision or sound judgment. Separate the animals whenever no one can watch them directly.

- EXTRA TALL CAT GATE FOR JUMPERS: Adjustable from 47.2 to 86.6 inches high, this indoor pet gate creates a taller doorway barrier for agile cats, active jumpers and multi-pet households. Ideal for helping manage room-to-room access during introductions, feeding or everyday separation.
- PRESSURE MOUNTED FOR DOORWAYS: Designed for openings from 27.5 to 37.8 inches wide. The pressure-mounted setup installs without drilling for standard doorway use. Measure the top, middle and bottom of your opening before ordering and use the narrowest measurement to confirm fit.
- 1.38-INCH NARROW BAR SPACING: Closely spaced vertical bars help reduce opportunities for adult cats to squeeze through while still allowing pets to see and smell one another. Especially useful for cat introductions, foster setups and controlled indoor pet zones. Supervise very small kittens.
- WALK-THROUGH DOOR FOR DAILY ACCESS: The integrated door allows adults to move between rooms without taking down the entire gate. A double-lock design helps keep the door closed during everyday use while maintaining convenient access for people.
- ADJUSTABLE FOR YOUR SPACE: Multiple height sections allow the gate to adapt to different doorway heights, making it useful for bedrooms, kitchens, hallways and other indoor spaces. Tighten pressure points evenly during setup and periodically recheck the gate after regular use.
VCA’s shelter-foster guidance recommends supervising interactions and play for the first few weeks and considering unsupervised access only after a period without incident. Its cat-introduction guidance describes a gradual process that may take approximately two weeks, with progression only after several calm sessions. These are guidance points, not a universal schedule or a guarantee; individual animals may need more time or professional help. Repeat, pause, or progress based on whether each animal remains calm and can disengage.

| Resident pet | Start with | Key management |
|---|---|---|
| Another dog | Short leash walks at a comfortable distance in neutral territory | Watch body language; separate feeding; remove valued toys and bones during early shared time |
| Cat | Scent familiarity, then visual contact through a secure barrier | Provide a dog-free refuge and retreat route; manage the dog carefully when the cat moves |
In both cases, calm behavior, comfort, and the ability to disengage matter more than completing a set number of days or meetings.
