Move to brief, supervised meetings only when both animals remain calm. The right pace depends on the species and the individuals; if you see distress or unsafe behavior, create distance and return to an earlier stage.
Before the new pet arrives, set up separation
Plan for the animals to live apart at first, with a reliable way to prevent unsupervised contact. Give the newcomer a quiet, protected area and let the resident animal keep familiar territory and routines. For a new cat or kitten, this can be a separate room; in a dog-and-cat home, make sure the cat has a dog-free retreat and routes the dog cannot block. ASPCA adoption advice recommends giving pets time and space to observe one another rather than forcing interaction (ASPCA adoption tips).
Consider the resident pet’s health, activity level, temperament, and past experience with other animals. A dog that has difficulty around other dogs, for example, may find a new canine housemate challenging. Arrange separate feeding and sleeping areas, and put away valued toys, bones, and other items that could prompt competition.
How to introduce pets, step by step
1. Give the newcomer time to settle and start with scent
Let the new pet adjust in its safe area before arranging a meeting. Allow the animals to smell each other through a closed door, or exchange scent-bearing items such as towels. For cats, VCA recommends scent exchange and letting each cat explore the other’s area separately before face-to-face contact (VCA: Introducing New Adult Cats).

There is no universal number of days to wait. VCA’s foster guidance describes an approximately two-week gradual approach for cat introductions, but that is not a deadline or guarantee. Base the next step on how the animals behave, not on the calendar.
2. Let them see each other through a barrier
When both animals seem comfortable with the scent stage, allow them to observe one another through a secure gate, screen, or other suitable barrier. Start at a distance where they can remain relaxed; reward calm behavior. If either animal becomes distressed, end the session or reduce exposure and return to the closed-door stage.

For a dog-and-cat introduction, keep the dog on leash and make sure the cat can retreat to a protected area. Do not allow the dog to chase the cat. VCA’s guidance on dog-cat household transitions describes using a barrier and leash for controlled introduction (VCA: Moving with Your Dog).
3. Try brief, supervised meetings
Move to direct contact only after repeated calm sessions at the barrier. Keep early meetings short and supervised, and separate the animals whenever nobody can watch them. For dog-cat meetings, retain leash control and allow the cat an escape route. Increase access only when both animals appear neutral or relaxed.

For two dogs, meet in neutral territory when practical, with handlers and leashes as needed. Remove toys, bones, and other valuable items that could trigger conflict. Rewarding quiet, settled behavior is preferable to creating competition around high-value treats. VCA’s dog-introduction guidance discusses temperament, resources, and controlled meetings (VCA: Introducing a New Dog to Your Family Dog).
Adjust the approach to the animals
Dog meeting dog
Take account of both dogs’ social history, arousal, and comfort with other dogs. Early tension may arise around food, resting places, territory, possessions, or attention from people. Keep those resources separate at first, use controlled introductions, and do not leave the dogs together unsupervised until you can manage their interactions safely.

- ADJUSTABLE FOR YOUR SPACE: Multiple height sections allow the gate to adapt to different doorway heights, making it useful for bedrooms, kitchens, hallways and other indoor spaces. Tighten pressure points evenly during setup and periodically recheck the gate after regular use.
Dog meeting cat
Let the dog acclimate to the home’s scent while the cat stays secure. Use a barrier for initial visual contact, keep the dog leashed during early meetings, and provide the cat with a dog-free room, hiding places, and escape routes. A calm meeting while the cat is stationary does not establish that the dog will remain safe around a moving cat; prevent chasing.
Cat meeting cat, or kitten meeting a resident pet
Start the new cat in a protected room. Exchange scents, then let each animal explore the other’s area separately before visual contact. Keep feeding and sleeping areas separate initially, and provide enough resources that the cats do not have to compete. The Humane Society of the United States advises: “Don’t require your resident cat to share a litter box with a new cat” (HSUS: Top 10 Tips).

Birds, rabbits, reptiles, and other pairings
Dog-and-cat or cat-and-cat steps should not be treated as a general protocol for other species. The guidance cited here does not establish a safe introduction method for birds, rabbits, reptiles, or other less-covered pairings. Ask a veterinarian with relevant species expertise for a species-specific plan before allowing contact.

Calmly interrupt the interaction and create distance without forcing the animals closer. Return to the last stage at which both could remain relaxed, and try again later only if it is safe to do so. Do not punish a dog for warning signals such as growling: VCA cautions that punishment can suppress communication and worsen the relationship.
Contact a veterinarian about health concerns. Seek help from a veterinary behaviorist or another qualified veterinary behavior professional if there is aggression, lunging, chasing, strong prey drive, persistent distress, repeated inability to settle, or any doubt that you can keep the animals safe.
