Yes, cats can survive a fall from a balcony, but a fall can also cause life-threatening injuries that are not obvious at first. Locate your cat, keep movement to a minimum, and contact a veterinarian or emergency animal hospital promptly. If your cat is having difficulty breathing, go to an emergency hospital now.
What to do immediately after your cat falls
- Find your cat and call for veterinary guidance. Phone the nearest veterinary clinic or emergency animal hospital while preparing to transport your cat, and follow its instructions. Do not wait to see whether your cat starts limping or acting ill.
- Handle your cat gently and limit movement. VCA Animal Hospitals advises supporting the body behind the front legs and in front of the back legs, then placing the cat in a carrier. If possible, remove the carrier’s top rather than pushing an injured cat through its door. If you have no carrier, or your cat cannot rise, use a rigid object as support. If a back injury is possible, keep your cat as still as you can.
- Make breathing trouble an emergency. Go straight to an emergency hospital for difficulty breathing. Cats are nose breathers, and panting can signal respiratory distress. Keep the trip calm and avoid unnecessary handling.
- Cover wounds while arranging care. For an open wound, VCA recommends covering it with a clean towel. If there is bleeding, apply gentle, firm pressure; if the towel becomes soaked, place another clean towel on top instead of removing the first.
These steps are only interim first aid. They do not replace veterinary assessment.
Why a cat that seems fine still needs a check
Falls can cause sprains, fractures, head or jaw injuries, and damage to the chest or abdomen, including punctured lungs. A cat may initially look normal or be able to walk, then become weak or lethargic or develop breathing problems. Some complications, including punctured lungs or hernias, can show up later.
ASPCA reports that high-rise fall victims who receive immediate and proper medical attention have a 90% survival rate. That figure is conditional on prompt, appropriate care; it is not a prediction for an individual cat or a reason to wait. The ASPCA also warns that falls from one- or two-story buildings can be dangerous. A short fall, a landing on the feet, or the ability to walk does not establish that your cat is uninjured.

Signs of injury to watch for
Contact a veterinarian promptly after a fall even if you do not see these signs. Seek urgent veterinary help if any appear, especially breathing difficulty, weakness, or a marked change in behavior.
- Reluctance to stand or walk, stiffness, limping, or apparent pain when rising or lying down
- Difficulty breathing or panting
- Whining, lethargy, or reduced appetite
- Difficulty eating, or blood from the eyes, nose, or mouth
After an initial veterinary assessment, keep watching for new or worsening symptoms. VCA also advises monitoring eating, drinking, urination, and bowel movements. In its guidance, lack of urination within 24 hours or no normal bowel movement within 48 hours are reasons to seek veterinary help; these are VCA’s after-fall monitoring recommendations, not stand-alone diagnostic tests.

How to prevent another fall
Falls often happen when a cat is distracted by a bird or another outdoor stimulus and loses balance. Do not rely on a balcony railing or a cat’s ability to land on its feet to keep it safe.
- Keep balcony doors and windows closed or physically secured when there is no suitable barrier.
- Fit windows with snug, sturdy screens and secure adjustable screens firmly in their frames. ASPCA warns that childproof window guards are not a substitute: cats can slip through them.
- Choose a barrier that fits the opening and closes gaps. Check the frame, attachment, anchoring, and dimensions—not just the mesh.
Pet-resistant replacement screen mesh is one option for windows, doors, patios, or porches. Phifer describes its PetScreen as tear- and puncture-resistant and designed to resist damage by most dogs and cats, but that does not establish that a particular frame or installation is secure enough to prevent a fall. For a balcony or unusual opening, custom protective mesh or an enclosure may be worth investigating; supplier claims should not be treated as independent safety testing.
