If your dog is missing after a hurricane or other disaster, first make sure people and pets are out of danger. Then search nearby calmly, report the dog to local animal organizations and the microchip registry, and share a clear photo and consistent details. Keep following up: a dog may be found or brought to a shelter days later. Follow local emergency orders and ask local animal authorities where displaced animals are being received.

1. Make sure it is safe to search

Confirm that your household is in a safe place and follow evacuation orders and access restrictions. Floodwater, debris, downed power lines, damaged buildings, unsafe roads, and displaced wildlife can put you at risk. Do not enter a damaged structure or restricted area to look for your dog. The CDC’s emergency pet guidance advises families to get to safety before beginning a search; contact local emergency officials about active hazards.

If other pets are with you, keep them leashed or secured in carriers. FEMA’s 2010 animal-response instructor guide notes that changed scents and landmarks can confuse animals after a disaster and recommends close contact and leashing pets outside in the first days.

2. Search nearby without frightening your dog

When the area is safe, calmly walk or drive nearby and call your dog’s name. Bring a leash, treats, and a familiar toy. Check likely sheltered spots—such as under porches or around sheds and garages—only if they are safe to approach. A frightened dog may hide or move unpredictably, so avoid rushing toward a sighting in a way that could make the dog bolt. If you see your dog but cannot safely approach, ask local animal control or an experienced rescue group for help.

If it is safe and practical, leave food, water, or a familiar item near home. Humane World for Animals includes these steps in its disaster-preparation guidance.

3. Report the missing dog to local animal organizations

Contact nearby animal shelters, rescue groups, humane societies, and local animal control. Ask county or state animal-response teams which locations are receiving animals displaced by the disaster and how to report a missing pet or check for an intake. If you are staying at an evacuation shelter that accommodates pets, tell the pet caretaker and provide a flyer.

4. Report the loss to the microchip registry

Contact the chip company or registry and report your dog missing. Confirm that your phone number, email, and alternate contact details are current. Include the chip number in reports to shelters if available. A chip can help reunite you only if a shelter or veterinary provider scans it and the registry record leads to someone who can be reached. A collar with a current ID tag gives a finder another direct way to contact you.

5. Spread a clear, consistent alert

Post a recent photo and the same identifying details in local lost-and-found pet groups and services. Humane World lists Facebook, Nextdoor, Craigslist, PawBoost, and Petco Love Lost as examples. When locations are open and accessible, put up or hand out simple flyers at shelters, veterinary offices, pet stores, grocery stores, and community centers. Include the last-known location and time, a phone number, and a second contact method.

6. Keep checking and close the loop

Continue calling shelters and rescue organizations and checking local listings, even if the first search turns up nothing. Update your posts when there is a new sighting or the search area changes. When your dog is found, tell every organization you contacted so it can close its report and stop circulating the alert. Reunification efforts can continue after the immediate disaster response.

Prepare now to make a future separation easier to resolve

Keep your dog’s collar ID and microchip registration current. Save a recent photo, medical information, and emergency contacts electronically and in waterproof form. Ready.gov recommends a backup collar and ID tag, harness or leash, records, a photo, and familiar toys or bedding in a pet emergency kit. The ASPCA’s disaster-preparedness guidance also recommends current identification and microchip registration, a leash or harness, photographs, records, and a sturdy carrier.

  • Pack a spare collar and leash or harness, a carrier, food, water, medications, and a familiar item.
  • Keep an up-to-date photo and identifying details ready to share.
  • Before an emergency, find out which local shelters or animal agencies handle displaced pets and how they accept missing-pet reports.

Local shelter intake, animal-control responsibilities, reunification sites, and emergency restrictions vary, so use local authorities for the exact reporting process. Official guidance offers practical recovery steps, not a verified current reunion rate or a guaranteed recovery timeline.
