Prepare to evacuate with your dog before a hurricane warning: identify local routes and a dog-accepting destination, arrange safe transport, and pack the dog’s food, water, medicines, documents, and identification. Follow local officials’ alerts and evacuation directions; shelter rules and capacity vary, so confirm them directly.

Make an evacuation plan that includes your dog

Find your local evacuation zone, official routes, alert channels, and designated destinations before a storm threatens. Include your dog in the household plan rather than assuming you can return for them later. FEMA recommends planning for pets and checking local evacuation information; its hurricane guidance also emphasizes learning community routes and following local directions. See Ready.gov’s pet disaster guidance and Ready.gov’s hurricane guidance.

Choose and verify a destination

Identify one or more places you could reach with your dog, then contact each destination directly. Ask whether it accepts dogs, whether there are restrictions or required documents, whether space is currently available, and whether you can stay with your dog. Acceptance and capacity are local facts that can change; national guidance cannot establish the rules for a particular shelter, hotel, or other destination.

Plan how you will travel

Decide how the dog will travel with the household and choose a carrier, crate, or traveling bag that fits the dog and suits your transport. FEMA recommends a sturdy carrier or similar option for each pet. Check that it can be secured in your vehicle or carried as needed, has secure closures and adequate ventilation, and can be cleaned. Introduce the dog to it in ordinary conditions so it is familiar before an emergency.

Pack a dog evacuation go-bag

Keep supplies together where you can take them quickly. FEMA and Ready.gov’s checklist recommends preparing the following items; tailor them to your dog’s health, the trip length, and the destination rather than relying on a universal quantity.

  • Transport: A traveling bag, crate, or sturdy carrier for each pet.
  • Food and water: Your dog’s regular food, drinking water, food and water dishes, and treats.
  • Medication and first aid: Regular medicines in a waterproof container and a pet-appropriate first-aid kit. Include any supplies your dog routinely needs.
  • Restraint and identification: A collar with a current ID tag, a backup collar, and a harness or leash.
  • Records: Copies of registration information and your veterinarian’s contact details. Keep paper copies protected from water and store electronic copies where practical.
  • Cleanup: Waste bags, paper towels, and other sanitation supplies your dog needs.
  • Comfort: Familiar toys or bedding to help make an unfamiliar place less stressful.
  • Identification photo: A current picture of you with your dog, useful for documenting ownership and helping identify your dog if you are separated.

Update identification and documents

Check that the phone number and other contact details on your dog’s ID tag are current. Confirm that the microchip registration has up-to-date contact information, and keep registration details accessible in your go-bag. A current photo of you and your dog can help document ownership and aid identification if you become separated. Ready.gov also recommends checking microchip registration and ID-tag contact details in its planning-with-pets guidance.

When evacuation is advised or ordered

  1. Follow current local alerts and instructions. Use official evacuation directions and routes; do not wait for a particular storm threshold.
  2. Take your dog and the go-bag. Bring the carrier or crate, leash and harness, food, water, medicines, records, and identification supplies.
  3. Go to the destination you have confirmed. If its acceptance or capacity has changed, contact local emergency management or another destination directly for current options.

FEMA’s hurricane safety guidance says to evacuate when ordered and follow local directions. Review Ready.gov’s hurricane safety information. This is general U.S. preparedness guidance, not a substitute for local emergency instructions or advice from your veterinarian about your dog’s individual medical needs.

Choose a carrier or kit for your dog’s actual needs

FEMA recommends a carrier or crate, but it does not endorse a particular product or brand. When choosing one, assess fit, secure closure, ventilation, cleanability, and how easily it can be carried and positioned in your vehicle. If you use a preassembled emergency kit, check its contents against your dog’s actual food, medicines, and other needs; do not assume it is complete for your situation.
