For lasting change, use gradual, reward-based training between storms. If your dog tries to escape, hurts itself, or remains intensely distressed, contact a veterinarian for an individual plan. A dog’s rescue status does not establish why it is afraid.
What to do during a storm
Storm fear can be triggered by more than thunder. Darkening skies, heavy rain, lightning, and changes in barometric pressure may all contribute, so a dog can become anxious before the loudest sounds begin. VCA explains the range of storm cues.
- Offer a protected retreat. Before storm season, identify a quieter room or sheltered spot. Close curtains or blinds to reduce flashes and use a familiar bed or mat if your dog likes it.
- Let the dog choose. Leave a familiar crate open if it is already a comfortable haven. Do not shut a panicking dog inside: some dogs may injure themselves trying to get out. VCA’s guidance for severe storm phobias emphasizes individual safety.
- Mask some sound if helpful. Music or white noise may soften storm sounds. Keep the volume comfortable and treat this as an environmental aid, not a substitute for behavior treatment.
- Offer calm company or an activity. If your dog can engage, offer a favorite food, play, or quiet companionship. Reward relaxed behavior. Do not punish fear, drag the dog toward the noise, or force it to endure a storm exposure.
- Protect against escape and injury. If the dog is trying to flee, injuring itself, or unable to settle, focus on immediate safety and contact a veterinarian for guidance rather than relying on retail products alone.
How to build storm tolerance between storms
Behavior work aims to change how the dog responds, not to make it endure frightening sounds. VCA describes the approach as “systematic desensitization and counterconditioning”: introduce a storm-related sound at a level that does not cause distress and pair it with something positive.
Start with relaxation
Teach a simple settling behavior, such as resting on a mat in a comfortable, quiet place. Practice when the dog is calm, and reward relaxed behavior. This gives you a familiar activity to build on during later training.

Introduce recordings at a barely audible level
Play a storm recording so quietly that your dog stays comfortable. Pair it with rewards, and keep sessions easy enough that the dog can remain relaxed. Increase the volume in small steps only while the dog continues to show comfort. If the dog reacts, stop or lower the volume and return to an easier level; do not push through distress. VCA’s storm and fireworks treatment guidance recommends gradual exposure and rewards.
Keep expectations realistic
Practice regularly; progress may take weeks. Recordings cannot reproduce every part of a real storm, including visual changes and other environmental cues, so success in training does not guarantee the dog will be fully relaxed during every storm. Avoid full-volume playback or any deliberate exposure that overwhelms the dog. If fear is moderate or severe, get help from a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional.

When to contact a veterinarian
Ask a veterinarian for an assessment if the fear is intense, is getting worse, does not improve with careful training, or interferes with your dog’s safety. A veterinarian can assess severity and check for medical or behavioral factors that may contribute to sound sensitivity. Escape attempts and self-injury warrant prompt professional help.
Medication may be appropriate for some dogs, including when storms cannot be controlled, but the veterinarian should decide what to use and when. Do not give medication, supplements, or other therapeutic products without veterinary direction: products may have side effects or interact with other treatments. VCA’s overview of behavior-management products advises checking products with a veterinarian.

Optional aids: what they can and cannot do
Choose support according to what your dog can tolerate and the level of risk. No single product is established as best for every dog, and these aids play different roles.
| Support | Possible role | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Quiet room and familiar resting place | Provide a retreat the dog can choose during a storm. | It may improve comfort but does not by itself change the fear response. |
| Music or white noise | Mask some storm sound. | It will not remove other storm cues or replace behavior treatment. |
| An anxiety wrap or vest | May help some dogs as an optional comfort aid. | Response varies; a wrap alone may not be enough. Introduce it during pleasant, calm periods rather than only when storms begin. VCA’s discussion of anxiety vests notes that response can differ. |
| Gradual desensitization and counterconditioning | Build a more positive response to manageable storm-related sounds over time. | It requires patient practice below the dog’s fear threshold, and recordings cannot recreate every storm cue. |
| Veterinary assessment and prescribed medication, if appropriate | Address severe fear and consider an individualized treatment plan. | Medication choice and timing belong to the veterinarian; products and supplements should also be checked for safety. |
Veterinary sources also discuss pheromone products, but available guidance does not establish that a particular product works for most dogs. Ask your veterinarian before using therapeutic products, including supplements or essential oils.

Adjust the plan to your dog’s response
- Your dog can eat or play and settles in a retreat: use the retreat and calm activities during storms, then practice gradual sound training when storms are unlikely.
- Your dog notices the recording but stays relaxed: keep the exposure at that easy level and reward calm behavior before considering a small increase.
- Your dog becomes tense, hides, or stops engaging during training: reduce the sound or stop the session. Training should remain below the level that causes distress.
- Your dog attempts escape, self-injures, or cannot settle: prioritize safety and contact a veterinarian for a tailored plan.
Rescue dogs, like other dogs, can be afraid of storms, but rescue history alone does not reveal the cause. Focus on what your dog shows you now: whether it can settle, whether it can engage with food or play, and whether it is at risk of escape or injury.
