The first-steps video captures Tula-Tu, Rose-Tu’s calf, shortly after her birth at Oregon Zoo on February 1, 2025. The Zoo reported that she stood on her own within 15 minutes and took her first steps soon afterward. In its July 2026 update, the Zoo said Tula-Tu weighed more than 1,300 pounds and was playing with a four-foot enrichment ball.
A calf standing minutes after birth
Oregon Zoo announced on February 3, 2025, that 30-year-old Asian elephant Rose-Tu had given birth at 4:29 p.m. on February 1, after a pregnancy lasting more than 20 months. The Zoo’s initial estimate put the calf at roughly 200 pounds; a later Zoo retrospective reported her birth weight as 210 pounds.
The Zoo said Rose helped her newborn up right away. Tula-Tu stood independently within about 15 minutes and took her first steps soon afterward. The first announcement described the calf as an apparently healthy female, while staff postponed a veterinary check to give mother and calf time to bond.
Watch the moment Rose-Tu helps her baby
The video shows the interaction between mother and newborn: Rose-Tu stays close and helps her calf as she learns to coordinate her legs. The Zoo’s account describes a quick transition from lying on the ground to standing and taking uncertain first steps.

Standing and walking soon after birth help a calf keep close to her mother and herd. Tula-Tu’s first steps are one moment in a longer process of learning to move, feed and take part in life with her elephant family.
The baby elephant was later named Tula-Tu
The Zoo confirmed the calf was female and announced her name, Tula-Tu, on February 13, 2025. Oregon Zoo says “Tula” means “balance” in Sanskrit. The “-Tu” suffix honors her mother, Rose-Tu, and grandmother, Me-Tu.
Rose-Tu’s family also includes her calf Samudra and her earlier calf Lily, who died from a virus in 2018 before reaching age six. Four days after Tula-Tu’s birth, she met her aunt Sung-Surin. The Zoo reported that the elephants touched trunks and shared a snack.
Elephants live in matrilineal family groups. Oregon Zoo elephant program supervisor Steve Lefave said each new member is important to the whole herd, not just the mother.

Why elephant enrichment matters
Environmental enrichment provides animals with stimulating objects, activities and opportunities to explore. Oregon Zoo describes Tula-Tu playing with a four-foot ball in July 2026 as one example. Its updates also describe her trying foods, including bamboo, as she grew.
The ball is an institutional enrichment object, not a consumer recommendation. Oregon Zoo says its elephant care program has spanned more than 60 years and that it established a $1 million endowment for Asian-elephant conservation, including support for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ SAFE program.
An endangered species—and a careful conservation message
Oregon Zoo describes Asian elephants as threatened by habitat loss, conflict with humans and disease. The Zoo estimates that 40,000 to 50,000 Asian elephants remain in fragmented populations from India to Borneo, and says 20% of people worldwide live in or next to Asian-elephant habitat. These are Oregon Zoo’s published estimates, not independently verified figures in the research for this article.
