Choose the animal whose everyday care, housing, social needs, costs, and temperament fit your household—not the one assumed to be easiest. Dogs, cats, and small pets have different needs, and “small pet” covers many species. Compare the care you can reliably provide with the needs of the individual animal, and check species-specific guidance before bringing one home.
Compare the care you can provide
Start with your real household routine, not an idealized version of it. The right match depends on who will do the work, what the animal needs to thrive, and whether you can sustain that care over its lifetime. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s dog-selection guidance and the RSPCA’s readiness guidance both point to practical fit: time, space, cost, experience, and lifestyle.
- Daily time: Account for feeding, cleaning and elimination, exercise, play, grooming, training where appropriate, handling, enrichment, and companionship. Decide who is responsible each day and how care will be covered during work, travel, or illness.
- Space and safety: Consider more than the size of your home. Think about secure outdoor access or exercise areas, suitable resting and hiding places, enclosure requirements, landlord permission, and local restrictions.
- Social and behavioral needs: Find out whether the animal needs frequent interaction with people or company of its own species. Consider normal activity times, noise, handling tolerance, and behaviors that may not suit your household.
- Budget and veterinary access: Plan for food, housing or bedding, equipment, preventive and illness care, grooming, training, boarding, and emergencies. Check that a local veterinarian can treat the species, especially if you are considering a small mammal.
- Household and long-term fit: Factor in allergies, children, other pets, work patterns, travel, future housing changes, and the adult who will remain ultimately responsible. Assess the particular animal’s health, history, confidence, and temperament.
What to expect from each option
Dog
Dogs need daily feeding, grooming, exercise, play, and elimination care, along with companionship. Plan for training and socialization where needed, and arrange reliable care when you are away. Puppies generally require more time for housetraining, socialization, obedience training, feeding, exercise, and supervision; an adult dog may already have some foundational training. Match the dog’s needs and temperament to your schedule, living arrangements, and available time.
Costs can include food, housing, mental stimulation, routine veterinary care, emergency treatment, grooming, boarding, licensing, identification, sterilization, training, and accessories. A single ownership-cost figure would be misleading without a location, date, and consistent definition of what is included; request local estimates from a veterinarian or rescue.

Cat
Do not assume that cats need no daily attention or are automatically easier than dogs. Apply the same readiness checks: daily care, suitable surroundings, nutrition, health care, companionship, costs, and fit with the household. Ask a veterinarian or cat rescue for current guidance tailored to the cat you are considering and your home.
Small pet
“Small pet” is not one care category. Guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, mice, gerbils, degus, chinchillas, and ferrets differ in housing, diet, handling, enrichment, and companionship needs. Some are delicate, nocturnal, or easily stressed by noise and handling, so a small body does not mean simple care. The RSPCA’s small-pet guidance is a starting point; check a current care guide for the exact species before choosing or buying equipment.

Social needs vary too. RSPCA guidance says rabbits should be adopted in bonded pairs unless an existing rabbit needs a companion; guinea pigs, rats, and many other small pets need company, while hamsters usually live alone. Its adoption guidance gives a broad lifespan range: around two years for some hamsters and five years or more for guinea pigs, ferrets, and chinchillas. These are general figures, not a guarantee for an individual animal. See the RSPCA small-pet adoption guidance for more detail.
Rabbits and guinea pigs need large, secure accommodation with room to move and explore, as well as companionship of their own species. A small cage, a child’s room, or company from another species should not be assumed to meet those needs. Confirm the exact housing requirements before adopting or setting up an enclosure.

Think carefully about children and other household members
Children can participate in care, but an adult must supervise and remain responsible for the animal’s daily needs. Consider whether the animal’s activity pattern and handling tolerance suit the child. A pet that is nocturnal, delicate, or stressed by noise may not be comfortable with frequent handling, even if a child hopes to pick it up and cuddle it. Check the animal’s welfare needs and the household’s expectations before deciding.

When possible, talk with a shelter or rescue about an animal’s history, temperament, and fit for your household. The ASPCA encourages people considering a companion animal to look first at shelters and rescues. If purchasing a dog, the ASPCA advises visiting a responsible breeder and opposes acquiring puppies from commercial breeders, brokers, or retail outlets selling puppies. For any animal, ask about its health, behavior, social needs, and care history, and get advice from a veterinarian familiar with the species.
