The most reliable way to keep a dog out of deliveries is to remove access: bring packages inside promptly and put boxes and packing materials behind a closed door or otherwise beyond your dog’s reach. Then teach “leave it” and “drop it” away from deliveries, and offer safe enrichment as an alternative. Toys and deterrents can help, but neither makes an accessible package safe.
Stop access to packages first
Make package management part of your routine: retrieve deliveries promptly, then store boxes, tape, plastic, foam, and other packing materials where your dog cannot get to them. If you cannot supervise your dog, use a dog-proof room, gated area, or a crate the dog has been gradually and positively conditioned to use. Keep the space free of tempting items and provide appropriate alternatives.
Permission to open one package can make other packages seem fair game. As AKC author Hilarie Erb puts it, “To him, a package is a package, so if you leave one within reach at any time of the year, he could decide to help himself.” AKC explains why letting a dog open gifts can encourage interest in other boxes.
Use confinement with care
A crate is one possible way to prevent unsupervised chewing, not a place to leave a dog for excessive periods. ASPCA advises no more than six hours in a crate for chewing management and emphasizes exercise and quality time outside confinement. A dog-proof room or gated area may be a better fit for some dogs. Teach cues before a package becomes a temptation
Practice useful cues when there is no delivery in the picture. “Leave it” asks the dog to move away from an item; “drop it” or “out” asks the dog to release something already in its mouth. Begin with easy, low-value objects and rewards, then gradually practice around more tempting items. Keep sessions calm and reward the behavior you want.
If your dog grabs packaging, do not chase or punish after the fact. When it is safe, trade the item for a more appealing reward, remove the package and loose material, and redirect your dog. AKC’s chewing guidance supports trading, redirection, and teaching “leave it” and “drop it.”

Give your dog a suitable alternative
A food puzzle or food-stuffed enrichment toy can occupy a dog while a delivery is being handled. Exercise, training, and mental stimulation may also help address boredom-related chewing. These are useful additions to management, not substitutes for keeping packages out of reach. ASPCA’s enrichment suggestions include activities that engage a dog’s interest and encourage supervision.
Choose a toy or chew suited to your dog’s size and chewing style, supervise its use, and remove it if it breaks into pieces that could be swallowed. Why deterrent sprays are not enough
A taste deterrent may be one part of a plan, but it does not physically secure a box or teach a dog what is appropriate to chew. ASPCA cautions that deterrents alone do not resolve destructive chewing; pair any deterrent with access control and training. Do not rely on a spray to protect a delivery left within reach.
What to do if your dog mouths or eats packaging
Prevent access to paper, tape, plastic, foam, and other packing material. If your dog has a package, trade for a reward when it is safe, then remove the box and loose material. If you suspect any packaging was swallowed, contact your veterinarian for advice specific to your dog and the material involved. When chewing needs professional help
Persistent chewing, anxiety, or aggression when an item is taken may call for help from a qualified trainer or veterinary behavior professional. If chewing is new or unusually intense, or you suspect mouth or dental pain, arrange a veterinary assessment; AKC notes that oral pain can sometimes contribute to excessive chewing.
