ASPCA’s 3-3-3 guideline offers broad waypoints: a new pet may feel overwhelmed during the first three days, begin to decompress over the next three weeks, and continue adjusting through the first three months. These are expectations, not deadlines or guarantees; some animals settle sooner, while others need more time.
What the 3-3-3 guideline means
The ASPCA describes the first days and weeks after adoption as a transition into unfamiliar sounds, smells, people, routines and, in some homes, other animals. A pet may need time to observe and feel safe before showing its usual behavior. The guideline is a practical framework, not a scientifically established timeline that applies to every animal.
The first three days: make things calm
Your pet may be nervous or overwhelmed. Keep the surroundings quiet and predictable, provide a place to retreat, and let the animal observe at its own pace. Avoid forcing contact with household members or other pets.
The following three weeks: let comfort build
As the pet becomes more comfortable, it may begin to decompress and settle into household routines. You can gradually build a bond and introduce basic training, using positive reinforcement and clear, consistent boundaries.

How to help an adopted pet settle in
- Set up a quiet safe space. Prepare a room, bed or crate where the pet can retreat without being disturbed.
- Keep a predictable routine. Consistency helps the pet learn what to expect; give it time to watch and explore at its own pace.
- Introduce people and animals gradually. Allow interactions to develop without forcing them. If you use a gate to limit access, choose one suited to the animal and home, install it safely, and supervise as appropriate; a gate is optional and does not replace gradual introductions.
- Pet-proof the home. Reduce access to areas that may be unsafe or overwhelming while the animal learns the space.
- Use calm, positive training. As the pet grows more comfortable, reward desired behavior and keep directions and boundaries consistent.
- Arrange a veterinary appointment shortly after adoption. A veterinarian can assess the pet’s health and advise you about concerns. See the ASPCA’s adoption tips.
When behavior changes may need attention
Stress can affect behavior, but a behavior change is not automatically proof of anxiety. The ASPCA lists hiding, not eating, withdrawing socially, panting, hypervigilance, dilated pupils, aggression, and twitching tails or ears as possible signs of stress or anxiety in cats. These signs do not establish a diagnosis, and health problems can also change behavior. Ask a veterinarian about concerning or persistent changes. The ASPCA discusses potential signs in its overview of pet anxiety and advises ruling out medical issues before behavior modification for separation anxiety; its guidance on behavior problems in older cats also addresses medical causes.
For a dog that seems uneasy, create distance from the situation rather than insisting on an interaction. The AVMA advises consulting a veterinarian if a dog’s fear or aggression seems unprovoked or excessive. See its dog-bite prevention guidance.
