Dogs may bark, rush to the door, or seem thrilled when a delivery arrives because they notice the sounds and people that come with it—not necessarily because they understand the package. The same reaction can come from alerting, territorial concern, fear or anxiety, or friendly greeting excitement. Look at your dog’s body language and the situation to tell these possibilities apart.

What sets off a dog’s reaction to deliveries?

A delivery is a bundle of cues: a doorbell or knock, footsteps, a voice, someone approaching the entrance, and often the owner moving toward the door. Any of these may alert a dog or predict that a person is about to arrive. Dogs can even bark at a doorbell sound on television, according to Cornell’s Riney Canine Health Center. The package itself may not be the trigger.

There is no single explanation for every dog. Barking can express excitement or play, alerting, territorial behavior, or fear and anxiety. Some dogs react especially strongly to people they see repeatedly, including postal workers and delivery drivers, notes PDSA.

As PDSA Vet Nurse Shauna Walsh puts it: “Dogs often see the front door as part of their territory, so when someone arrives unexpectedly, their instinct is to investigate or alert their family.”

Why barking can become a delivery-day habit

A familiar pattern may strengthen through repetition: someone approaches, the dog barks, and the person leaves after completing the delivery. The American Kennel Club (AKC) explains that this sequence can teach a dog that barking makes a perceived intruder go away. It is a plausible learning mechanism, not proof that every dog consciously intends to drive the worker off.

How to read the reaction

Watch the whole dog and the context, rather than treating every bark as excitement or aggression. A relaxed, wagging dog moving toward someone to greet them may be responding differently from a tense, frightened dog or one intent on driving a person away. An alert dog may be neither happy nor aggressive.

KADTC Adjustable 5-60 Min Slow Feeder Dog Bowl & Puzzle Feeder Anti-Gulping
  • SLOW DOWN CHOW TIME — Fine-tune the food flow to turn a rushed meal into a rewarding 5-60 minute routine.
  • MORE THAN A MAZE BOWL — Patented spin-to-release play lets dogs nudge, think, and earn every bite.
  • BEAT BOREDOM AT DINNER — Sniffing, spinning, and searching keep one dog happily busy while another eats in peace.
  • KEEPS SMART DOGS ENGAGED — Start easy, then slow the flow to keep clever pups challenged meal after meal.
  • ROOM FOR A REAL MEAL — The 4-cup chamber holds generous portions for dogs big or small, not just a handful of treats.

The ASPCA’s barking guidance distinguishes greeting behavior, which may involve relaxed, excited body language, from territorial or alarm barking connected with familiar places and perceived intruders. Fear and anxiety can also be part of the picture. These clues help guide your response, but they are not a formal diagnosis.

What to do when the doorbell triggers excitement

Build a calmer association with the sound through brief, controlled practice. The AKC recommends pairing the doorbell with high-value food rewards and gradually practicing the cue at a level your dog can handle. A recording or a helper can provide the sound; start quietly or from farther away if needed, and keep sessions manageable.

  1. Choose a food reward your dog values and have it ready before practicing.
  2. Play a doorbell recording softly, or ask a helper to ring from a distance. Begin at a level that does not overwhelm your dog.
  3. As the sound happens, offer the reward. Repeat in short sessions, increasing the sound’s volume or proximity gradually only while your dog remains comfortable.
  4. If your dog becomes more distressed or too worked up to take the reward, make the next repetition easier rather than pushing through.

The reward can be presented by hand or in a toy. The AKC also mentions dog-friendly peanut butter or spray cheese in a toy or on a lick mat as options. A lick mat is just one way to offer food; it is not required and does not itself treat barking. See the AKC’s doorbell-practice guidance for its suggested approach.

When to manage the environment or get help

If the reaction appears territorial or fearful, reduce opportunities for your dog to rehearse it where practical. The ASPCA suggests limiting the dog’s view or sound of passersby when that is a trigger, and building positive associations with strangers. Avoid shouting at an already excited or anxious dog: it can add to the noise rather than help the dog settle, cautions PDSA.
