If your dog loves shredding boxes, offer that activity as supervised enrichment rather than assuming every “power chewer” needs the hardest toy available. A designated cardboard box can satisfy a dog’s urge to tear and forage; a correctly sized rubber food toy can provide a more reusable alternative. Neither is right for every dog: choose based on fit and chewing behavior, then watch for damage or swallowed pieces.

Why dogs love chewing and shredding boxes

For some dogs, chewing, shredding and dissecting are rewarding activities. A cardboard box with a few treats or a favorite toy inside turns that urge into a simple foraging game. VCA recommends designating an approved place for shredding and supervising the activity; cardboard bits can pose a choking hazard.

Set up a supervised shredding activity

  1. Choose a designated spot where you can watch your dog closely.
  2. Place a few treats or a favorite toy in a cardboard box for your dog to uncover.
  3. Observe whether your dog tears the cardboard, swallows pieces or loses interest. If your dog eats the pieces, stop the activity rather than leaving it unsupervised.
  4. Dispose of the box and cardboard after the session.

This gives a box-loving dog an approved outlet without treating cardboard as a chew toy to leave out indefinitely. VCA also advises disposing of cardboard, tubes and paper after use.

How to choose durable dog toys for your chewer

“Power chewer” is not enough information to choose a toy. Focus on what your dog actually does with toys: steady gnawing, careful shredding, or biting off and swallowing pieces. ASPCA advises matching chew size to the dog and its chewing habits; AAHA notes that aggressive chewers may destroy toys quickly and suggests choosing one size above the recommendation for them.

What to check How to apply it
Fit Follow the product’s size range and avoid a toy small enough to be swallowed or fit wholly in your dog’s mouth. For an aggressive chewer, AAHA suggests sizing up from the recommended size.
Chewing style Choose with your dog’s observed behavior in mind. A dog that gnaws steadily presents a different challenge from one that tears toys apart and swallows bits.
Hardness AAHA’s screening checks are to press a thumbnail into the surface and see whether it yields, and to check that the toy bends slightly. If it is so hard a nail cannot be driven into it, AAHA says the dog should not chew it. These checks are practical heuristics, not a guarantee of safety.
Breakage and wear Look for pieces your dog could bite off, exposed stuffing, or ends worn into thin sections. Remove damaged toys and discard durable chews when excessively worn.
Engagement A stuffable rubber food toy can redirect chewing into licking and foraging. Freezing a suitable filling may extend the activity; use part of the dog’s normal meal when appropriate.

Durability and hardness are separate issues. A toy that breaks apart can create choking or blockage hazards, but a very hard chew can damage or fracture teeth. A tougher toy is not automatically the safer choice if its surface is too hard for your dog.

When to try a rubber food toy

If your dog needs a more reusable activity than cardboard shredding, consider an appropriately sized rubber food toy. VCA includes KONG among examples of licking toys, and AAHA describes freezing part of a dog’s meal in a suitably sized rubber food toy as a way to provide a longer enrichment activity. A KONG Classic rubber dog toy is one example of the category, not a tested recommendation or a promise that it will withstand any particular dog.

When to remove a toy or stop the activity

  • Your dog bites off pieces: Take the toy away. Small parts can pose a choking hazard, and swallowed material may cause a blockage.
  • A durable chew is excessively worn: Discard it, especially if wear has created thin sections that could break away.
  • A chew is extremely hard: Do not let your dog use it if it fails AAHA’s hardness screening checks; hard chews can damage or fracture teeth.
  • Your dog swallows a chunk: ASPCA advises contacting a veterinarian immediately if your dog consumes a chunk of chew material.
  • Your dog is shredding cardboard: Stay present, stop if pieces are being eaten, and clear away the cardboard when the session ends.

For more guidance, see the ASPCA position statement on dog chews and treats, VCA’s guides to enrichment and scheduling and enrichment and foraging toys, and AAHA’s advice on chew hazards and indoor enrichment.
