A blackbird that keeps returning to your garden has probably found something useful there: food, water, shelter, or familiar foraging ground. That pattern can also offer a clue to nearby nesting, but repeated visits alone do not prove there is a nest—or that the bird is sending a special message. The guidance below concerns the common blackbird (Turdus merula) in the UK.
Why does a blackbird keep coming back?
Blackbirds are common UK garden visitors and often forage on the ground. They turn over leaf litter and probe soil for insects and other small invertebrates, and they may also use supplementary food. A garden with accessible foraging spots, shelter, or water can therefore be worth revisiting. The British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) describes these feeding behaviors in its blackbird profile; the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) also describes blackbirds as a familiar garden species in its species profile.
Visits alone cannot tell you which resource attracted a particular bird, whether it is the same individual each time, or what that bird intends. In this sense, “telling you something” is best understood as a clue about the garden’s usefulness to wildlife—not as a supernatural message or proof the bird recognizes you.
Could a returning blackbird be nesting nearby?
Repeated trips to and from one particular hedge, shrub, tree, or other dense cover are more suggestive of nesting than general visits around the garden. The RSPB says, “The regular return of birds is your main indicator that birds are nesting.” Look for a consistent route or repeated activity at one focal spot rather than treating every appearance as evidence of a nest.

The RSPB describes March to September as the main nesting season for garden birds. Blackbird song is most regular from March through June, according to its blackbird profile. These are seasonal context, not proof: a blackbird may visit for food or other resources, and song by itself does not establish nesting.
What to observe
- Where it goes: General movement across the garden fits ordinary foraging; a repeated route to one patch of cover may be a nesting clue.
- What it does: Turning leaf litter or probing soil is normal feeding behavior. Repeated trips to and from the same spot in vegetation are more relevant to nesting.
- When it happens: Activity during the main garden-bird nesting season can add context, but timing alone does not confirm an active nest.
Blackbirds are partial migrants, so their presence in a particular garden can vary with season and location. The RSPB’s current estimate is roughly five to six million breeding pairs in the UK; the organization does not present that figure as the result of a newly conducted 2026 survey.

How to make your garden useful to blackbirds
Keep natural foraging areas
Leave some leaf litter or a quiet patch of soil where small invertebrates can be found. The RSPB identifies leaf litter as a source of insects and other small invertebrates for blackbirds and other ground-feeding birds; see its expert advice on bird feeding.
Offer food carefully
If you choose to supplement natural food, the BTO’s UK guidance recommends seeds and peanuts from November to April, pausing them from May to October, while mealworms and fat or suet may be offered year-round. Advice can change, so check the BTO’s current feeding guidance.

The RSPB says small amounts of mealworms can be offered on the ground and cleared by dusk. It cautions against scattering other foods on the ground, where uneaten food may attract rodents. Keep feeding equipment clean, and stop feeding if you see a sick bird, following the RSPB’s feeding guidance.
Provide clean water and cover
A clean water source and bird-friendly planting can support wildlife, but you do not need extra equipment if the garden already provides what birds need. A shallow container such as a plant saucer can serve as a water source. The RSPB advises replacing the water daily and disinfecting the container weekly in its expert advice.

- BUILT FOR SMALL SONGBIRDS — AND IT KEEPS THE BIG ONES OUT: Six small ports with 1.4" perches are sized for finches, chickadees, sparrows and nuthatches. Larger birds like blue jays, grackles and cardinals can't get a grip, so they stop raiding the tube and flinging the small seed on the ground to get at the big kernels. If you want cardinals or woodpeckers too, pair this with a platform or hopper feeder — this one is deliberately the small-bird station.
- WIDE LIFT-TOP + SEE-THROUGH TUBE — REFILL IN SECONDS: Lift the metal lid straight up and pour; the opening is wide enough that you are not funnelling seed through a narrow neck. The clear tube shows the level from across the yard, so you refill before it runs empty instead of checking by opening it. Holds 1.5lb of sunflower, safflower or mixed seed — a small tube on purpose: seed gets eaten before it can sit and go stale.
- HOW TO CLEAN IT: The lid lifts off and the tube is clear, so you can see exactly what needs cleaning. The base is fixed — not removable — so here is what works: tip the feeder upside down and tap to empty packed seed, run a bottle brush or pipe cleaner in through the ports, rinse, then stand it upside down until fully dry before refilling. Do this every 2-3 refills and after any spell of wet weather, so damp seed never sits at the bottom.
- METAL LID, BASE AND PORTS: The lid, base, perches and all six port surrounds are metal, so beaks and claws land on metal rather than thin plastic; the seed tube itself is clear polycarbonate, which is what lets you see the level. Note: this is not a squirrel-proof feeder — the ports are open and a determined squirrel can reach seed. If squirrels are a problem in your yard, hang it from a pole with a baffle, which is what owners who have no squirrel trouble do.
- HANG IT WHERE YOU CAN WATCH — POLE, BRANCH OR SHEPHERD'S HOOK (POLE NOT INCLUDED): The metal hanger fits a standard shepherd's hook, deck pole or tree branch. Most owners hang it within sight of a kitchen or living-room window — finches find a new feeder within days, and you get the show from inside. Works all four seasons, with the busiest months being late autumn and winter when wild food runs short. A ready gift for a parent, grandparent or anyone who watches birds.
What to do if you suspect a nest
Observe from a distance and avoid disturbing the bird or its likely nesting cover. The RSPB says active nests and eggs are protected, subject to legal exceptions, and recommends checking vegetation before carrying out work. The applicable legal guidance depends on the jurisdiction described on the RSPB’s nesting and nestbox guidance.
