How to Choose Safe Toys for a Rescue Dog

Pick toys for your rescue dog’s actual size, chewing strength, and play style. Supervise unfamiliar toys, inspect them often, and remove damaged or fragmenting items.

Choose a toy for the dog you have now—not for an assumed breed or a stereotype about rescue dogs. Start with a toy too large to swallow, suited to the dog’s observed chewing strength and play style, and watch closely during early use. A durable rubber treat-dispensing toy can be a useful first option, but no toy is safe for every dog or immune to damage.

What to check before choosing a toy

Size and swallowing risk

Choose a toy the dog can handle but cannot swallow or lodge in its mouth or throat. There is no single safe size for every dog, so assess the dog’s actual current size rather than relying on a breed label or guess. Balls and other toys that can fit far into the mouth deserve particular care.

Chewing strength and wear

Match the toy’s material and durability to the dog’s observed chewing. “Durable” does not mean indestructible: inspect toys regularly and remove anything cracked, torn, worn down, or shedding pieces. ASPCA advises choosing products for a pet’s species, size, and chewing habits, supervising chewing, and discarding excessively worn chews (ASPCA, Position Statement on Dog Chews/Treats).

Age and dental condition

Consider the dog’s teeth as well as its chewing enthusiasm. Very hard chews, including bones or antlers, can be a poor fit for puppies with developing teeth and older dogs with compromised teeth. The American Kennel Club advises asking a veterinarian about chew choices and notes that selection depends on factors including age and size (AKC, Which Dog Toys Are Right for Your Dog?).

Choose a toy for the kind of play the dog enjoys

Toy type Best fit Watch for
Rubber treat-dispensing toy Chewing or food enrichment, if the dog can use it without quickly damaging it Correct size, cracks, missing pieces, or signs the dog is swallowing material
Ball Supervised fetch with a ball large enough not to be swallowed Damage and swallow risk; tennis balls can abrade enamel or be popped and swallowed. Durable rubber is an alternative discussed by the AKC (AKC, A Guide to Toy Shopping for Your Pup).
Rope toy Interactive tug when the dog plays without eating the rope Shredding or swallowing strands; put it away after play if the dog pulls it apart
Plush or squeaker toy Comfort or gentle carrying for a dog that does not rip it open Loose stuffing, torn fabric, or an accessible squeaker; remove the toy if it is damaged
Edible chew Chewing, with a chew suited to the dog’s size and intensity Supervise; swallowed chunks can cause choking or gastrointestinal obstruction

SPCA of Texas identifies food-filled, Kong-type toys as one enrichment option, not a universally suitable product. Begin with an appropriately sized rubber treat-dispensing toy only if the dog’s behavior suggests it can use one safely, and inspect it often (SPCA of Texas, Choosing the Right Toys for Your Dog).

Introduce unfamiliar toys under supervision

  1. Offer one toy at a time. Choose a size and material that fit the dog, and watch how it is handled before leaving it available.
  2. Observe the play pattern. Notice whether the dog chews steadily, carries the toy, fetches it, or tears it apart. Remove plush toys that expose stuffing or squeakers, and stop rope play if the dog shreds or eats strands.
  3. Supervise edible chewing. Significant swallowed pieces can choke a dog or obstruct the gastrointestinal tract. If the dog swallows a chunk of chew material, contact a veterinarian for advice.
  4. Recheck the toy. Look for cracks, fraying, loose components, or pieces missing after play. Discard damaged or excessively worn toys rather than waiting for them to fail.
  5. Adjust as you learn. A toy that works during one session may become unsuitable as it wears or as the dog’s chewing habits become clearer.

Rescue status does not predict toy behavior

Being adopted from a shelter does not, by itself, show whether a dog is a gentle chewer, a toy destroyer, a fetch enthusiast, or likely to guard an object. The useful information comes from observing that individual dog. ASPCApro’s SAFER guide includes a toy-behavior item in a shelter-assessment context; it does not establish that a shelter assessment predicts how a dog will behave with toys at home (ASPCApro, SAFER Guide and Forms).

When toy removal or chewing raises a concern

If the dog may react aggressively when someone approaches or takes an item, do not reach into its mouth or force the toy away. ASPCA recommends seeking qualified behavior guidance for destructive chewing concerns involving aggression (ASPCA, Destructive Chewing). If the dog has swallowed a piece of a chew, ask a veterinarian what to do.
