A puppy climbing from the passenger seat onto her owner’s lap makes for a memorable clip—but it is not proof that a dog is safe loose in a car. Storyful identifies the dog in this video as Indy, a nine-month-old Kangal Shepherd, not a Labrador. Its January 19, 2021 record says owner Shane Firth filmed her in St. George, New Brunswick, and describes her moving onto his lap. The record does not establish whether the vehicle was moving at the instant she climbed over.
What happened in the video?
Storyful’s written record says Indy was sitting in the passenger seat before climbing onto Firth’s lap. Firth said she had never done that before and that he had been recording because she was being cute. Storyful also reported Firth’s caption saying he came to a quick, controlled stop and that Indy was scared. The account does not describe a crash or injury, and it does not independently establish whether the vehicle was moving when Indy climbed across. Storyful’s record identifies Indy as a nine-month-old Kangal Shepherd puppy; the Labrador label in the supplied title is not verified by that record.
Why a loose dog in the front can be dangerous
A dog that is free to move around the cabin may climb into the driver’s space, obstruct movement, or divert attention from the road. Even a brief distraction matters when a driver needs to respond to traffic, pedestrians, weather, or an unexpected obstacle. In a British Columbia Highway Patrol release, Corporal Michael McLaughlin put it plainly: “Driving is a complex task. You need all of your attention for unexpected lane changes, pedestrians, weather and obstacles.” That release also says having a dog on your lap is illegal—a statement about British Columbia, not a universal rule. Check the law where you travel.
How to secure a dog in the car
AKC recommends travelling with a dog in a crate or using a crash-tested dog seat belt. A properly fitted restraint can help reduce the risk of injury or ejection during abrupt braking or a crash, but products and fit vary. AKC’s car-travel guidance covers both options.

- Harness and seat-belt tether: Use a full-body harness attached to a vehicle-buckle tether, rather than attaching a tether to a collar. PetMD’s guidance says the tether should allow the dog to sit or lie comfortably while limiting forward travel toward the seat ahead. A correctly fitted harness-and-tether setup is commonly suited to larger dogs; check the harness fit and compatibility with your vehicle. PetMD explains the setup.
- Secured crate: A crate can keep a dog contained; secure it so it cannot slide or tip during travel. Check that it fits the dog and can be positioned safely in your vehicle.
- Small or medium dogs: PetMD notes that a car seat used with a full-body harness may suit some small and medium dogs. Do not assume a raised seat or a product’s marketing claims make it crashworthy.
For any restraint, check sizing, vehicle compatibility, instructions, and independent crash-test information. A harness, tether, carrier, or crate should not be called crash-tested or crashworthy unless reliable evidence supports that specific product.
How to help a puppy get comfortable with car travel
Introduce the restraint and car in small, positive steps instead of making the first experience a long drive. AKC and Dogs Trust both recommend gradual familiarization and rewards for calm behavior.

- Start outside the car. Let the puppy investigate the crate or harness and tether at home. Reward calm interest and short periods of wearing or entering the equipment.
- Approach the parked car gradually. Reward relaxed behavior near the car, then let the puppy explore it while stationary. Build up to the sounds and movement of getting in and out without rushing.
- Keep early practice short. Use brief, gentle sessions and reward calm behavior. If possible, have another person drive while you help the puppy settle in the restraint.
- Begin with a short trip. Once the puppy is more comfortable in the parked car, try a short drive and reinforce relaxed behavior. Increase journey length gradually.
- Pause if the dog is frightened. Do not force a journey when fear is overwhelming. Dogs Trust advises seeking help from an experienced behaviorist when a dog is frightened by car travel. Dogs Trust’s travel advice gives further guidance.
