Expect a transition, not a fixed deadline. A rescue dog may begin exploring within days or need longer to feel safe; over the first month, calm routines and gradual, dog-led introductions can help them settle. The popular “3-3-3” idea is a rough adoption guideline—not a measured timetable or a promise that every dog will adjust on schedule. The ASPCA and American Kennel Club (AKC) both emphasize that adjustment varies by dog.
What the first month may look like
Moving into a new home means new sounds, smells, people, routines and possibly other animals. A dog’s behavior during this transition may not show their settled personality. Give them time to observe and recover between new experiences rather than expecting immediate sociability or confidence.
First few days: lower the pressure
Keep the home quiet and interactions low-key. Set up a place where the dog can rest undisturbed, and let them choose whether and when to approach. A retreat might be an open bed or quiet room; a crate is an option only if the dog is comfortable using one. Don’t reach into a hiding place, pull the dog out, or make them meet visitors or other pets. The ASPCA’s adoption guidance recommends patience, routine, and allowing a new dog time and space.
The following weeks: let confidence emerge
Keep meals, toilet breaks, rest, walks and calm interaction as predictable as practical. As the dog becomes more comfortable, introduce short, positive training and reward behaviors you want to see. Avoid overwhelming them with a busy social calendar or too much activity at once. AKC guidance recommends a quiet atmosphere and routine for at least a few weeks, with new experiences introduced gradually.

Notice what the dog can handle comfortably: they may be ready to explore one room but not meet several visitors, or take a short walk but not visit a crowded place. Let their response guide the next step. Confidence may develop unevenly, and adjustment can continue beyond the first month.
How to read stress and respond
Possible signs of stress include excessive panting, pacing, tucked ears or tail, lip licking, yawning, freezing and crouching. Growling can signal that a dog feels uncomfortable or threatened. These signs need to be read in context, but they are reasons to pause and give the dog more space—not to force an interaction.

- Stop or increase distance from the person, animal or situation that may be causing discomfort.
- Give the dog a way to retreat, and avoid blocking or cornering them.
- Do not punish a growl or other warning signal. Consider what prompted it and prevent a repeat while you seek appropriate help if needed.
The ASPCA advises against forcing a fearful or uncomfortable dog to remain in a situation. If the dog shows aggressive behavior, even without an injury, contact a qualified behavior professional. For persistent or severe concerns, consult your veterinarian as well. Medication decisions should be made with a veterinarian as part of an individualized plan; they are not a substitute for addressing the dog’s environment and behavior needs.
Set up the home for safety and rest
Choose a retreat that matches the individual dog. An enclosed crate or exercise pen can help manage space, but it is not right for every dog. An open bed, a quiet room or another undisturbed spot may work better. The useful test is whether the dog can settle there and whether household members respect it as a no-interruption zone.

Use a leash, collar or well-fitting harness, and identification, and supervise the dog near doors and gates. A newly adopted dog may not yet know the household’s exits or routines. Manage access when doors open so the dog cannot dash outside; use a leash or secure confinement when appropriate. AKC’s adult-dog adjustment guidance also recommends preparing basic walking and identification equipment and supervising to prevent escapes.
Enrichment is optional and should suit the dog’s comfort. A treat-dispensing toy or simple nosework can offer engagement when the dog is ready. A harness and long line can support a controlled, gradual walk, provided the equipment fits and the dog remains supervised. No product replaces a quiet start, careful introductions or individualized care.

- PREPARED HERO PEACE OF MIND - Pets are pets. They get into things, especially when you're not looking. Be ready when your pet accidentally eats something toxic. Keep PawMergency in your kitchen, car, or travel bag—instant protection for those critical moments at home, the beach, or anywhere life takes you.
- GET THE RIGHT AMOUNT FOR YOUR PET - One tube covers dogs & cats up to 30 lbs. Dog weighs 31-60 lbs? Get 2 tubes. Dog weighs 61-90 lbs? Get 3 tubes. Dog weighs 91-120 lbs? Get 4 tubes. Dog weighs more than 121 lbs? Get 5 tubes. We recommend giving at least 1cc/1lb of body weight. Less than the required amount won't fully absorb the toxin — make sure you have enough based on your pet's weight.
- BROAD SPECTRUM ABSORPTION - PawMergency absorbs most common household items such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and many more. It works by binding toxins in your pet's digestive tract before they can be absorbed, allowing them to be eliminated through normal bowel movements. A must have for your pet's first aid kit!
- SUPERIOR MANUFACTURING - PawMergency is proudly made in the USA by a National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) preferred supplier. It’s produced following strict Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and tested by third-party labs to ensure quality, purity, and potency.
- 2 YEAR SHELF LIFE - After each use, simply put the cap back on the end of the tube and store for up to 2 years in a cool, dry place.
Arrange veterinary follow-up and gather records
Ask the rescue for the dog’s available medical, vaccination and care records, along with any behavior notes. Ask about vaccinations, spay or neuter status, prior veterinary care and known chronic conditions. Arrange a veterinary visit to review the dog’s health, preventive care and any concerns; the vet can advise what is appropriate for this dog’s age, history and health.
Seek immediate veterinary attention for a life-threatening emergency such as choking, heatstroke, suspected poisoning or severe trauma. For urgent concerns, contact a veterinary clinic or emergency service rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

Make introductions gradual and dog-led
Introduce household members, visitors, pets and new settings in manageable stages. Begin at a distance or for a short period, and give the dog room to disengage. If they freeze, retreat, growl or show other signs of discomfort, end or adjust the encounter rather than insisting they stay. The ASPCA’s guidance on fearful and uncomfortable dogs emphasizes letting dogs progress at their own pace.
There is no universal first-month schedule for walks, visitors, training or pet introductions. A dog’s age, health, history and household circumstances affect what is suitable, so use the dog’s behavior and veterinary or qualified behavior guidance to set the pace.
