Introduce a rescue dog to resident dogs gradually: start with a neutral-ground parallel walk, keep enough distance for both dogs to stay comfortable, and increase contact only while they remain relaxed. At home, use separate feeding and resting areas, remove valued toys and chews, and supervise every interaction until calm behavior is reliable. There is no fixed number of days that works for every dog.

Before the first meeting, consider whether the dogs are a good fit

Compare the dogs’ activity levels, health, play preferences, communication styles, and comfort with personal space. Also consider whether the resident dog can tolerate sharing resources and human attention. A mismatch in energy or play style can make living together harder, even when neither dog is behaving badly.

Shelter behavior observations can be useful, but they cannot predict every dog’s behavior in a home. Foster observations may provide additional context about how a dog behaves outside the shelter. The ASPCA explains the limits of shelter dog behavior assessments in its position statement; the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior also outlines considerations for bringing a second dog into the home.

How to make the first introduction

Choose neutral ground and bring one handler per dog

Meet outdoors somewhere neither dog is likely to guard as a resting area. Have a separate handler for each dog and begin walking in the same direction, with enough space between them that they can notice each other without being pressured to approach. A leash gives the handlers control; avoid holding it tight unless needed for safety, since a comfortable amount of room can help keep the meeting less tense. VCA’s guides to introducing a new dog and getting a second dog recommend a gradual, managed introduction.

Let the dogs set the pace

Reward calm behavior and allow the dogs to walk, sniff, or simply ignore each other. Ignoring or moving away is not a failed introduction; it can be an appropriate way for a dog to keep comfortable. Do not force a greeting, close nose-to-nose contact, or play. Keep early sessions brief and give the dogs time apart to rest.

Prepare the home before the rescue dog arrives

Set up separate resting spaces and a way to keep the dogs apart, such as a sturdy gate or another suitable barrier. Put away valued toys and chews before shared time, and feed the dogs in separate rooms or behind a barrier. Food, beds, toys, chews, territory, and human attention can all become contested resources; do not expect the dogs to share them immediately. VCA recommends these kinds of management steps in its second-dog guidance and fostering advice.

Build from outdoor meetings to supervised time at home

  1. Begin with parallel walks. Keep a comfortable distance and reward calm behavior. Let the dogs disengage or explore separately rather than requiring them to interact.
  2. Use short sessions with breaks. End a session while both dogs are still coping well, then give them separate space to settle.
  3. Try calm time together at home. Once outdoor meetings are relaxed, allow supervised time in a shared area with valued items removed and separate resting areas available.
  4. Separate them when you cannot supervise. Continue using separate spaces whenever you are away or unable to watch closely, until their behavior together is reliably calm.
  5. Increase access only as the dogs remain comfortable. Slow down or return to more distance and separation if either dog becomes tense, fearful, or over-aroused.

There is no universal timetable. Some dogs need a slower progression, and a particular number of days cannot guarantee that two dogs will settle together. VCA’s fostering guidance describes gradual introductions over approximately two weeks as practical advice, not a rule that applies to every pair.

Recognize when a dog needs a pause

Stiff posture and prolonged staring are signs that a dog may be uncomfortable. Fear, anxiety, or escalating arousal are also reasons to interrupt the interaction. Calmly create distance, redirect the dogs, or separate them so they can settle; do not wait for a warning to become a fight.

If a dog growls, treat it as information that the dog is uncomfortable. Do not punish the growl or try to force the dogs to continue interacting. Suppressing a warning signal can make it harder to recognize when a dog needs space. VCA advises supervising interactions and separating dogs when stiff posture or long stares appear in its guidance on getting a second dog.

When to seek professional help

Ask a qualified dog behavior professional or veterinary behaviorist for individualized help if either dog has a history of serious aggression, shows substantial fear around other dogs, or repeatedly struggles to settle during introductions. A professional can assess the dogs and help you choose safe management steps for your specific home. Do not assume that a general introduction plan is sufficient when there has been a serious incident or repeated distress.
