Give your dog a gentle massage with slow, broad, light strokes while they are relaxed and free to move away. Let your dog choose a comfortable position, watch their body language, and stop if they show discomfort or decline contact. Home massage is for comfort—not diagnosis or treatment—and pain, injury, or a medical condition calls for veterinary advice first.
How to give your dog a gentle massage
- Choose a quiet place. Let your dog settle in a position they find comfortable. They do not need to lie down, and you should not hold them still or insist they stay.
- Begin with slow, flat-hand strokes. Using a relaxed, flat hand, make gentle, broad sweeps. The American Kennel Club describes starting around the head and moving toward the tail. Keep your touch light and unhurried.
- Follow your dog’s response. Continue only while your dog appears comfortable. If they move away, flinch, become restless, nip, or growl, stop or ease off; do not try to make them accept the touch.
- Finish when your dog has had enough. End calmly and positively. As canine massage therapist Dr. Blotevogel advises, “If they indicate they’ve had enough, it’s best to stop and end on a positive note.”
Broad circular strokes or gently lifting and releasing loose skin may be options for a dog who is comfortable with touch, but they are not necessary. A simple, light sweep is a sensible place to start. Massage gloves are also optional; the AKC notes they can help with grip and pressure control, but you do not need them to massage your dog.
When not to massage your dog
Do not massage over open wounds, infected areas, tumors, or unstable fractures, or when pain is not appropriately controlled. Dogs with clotting problems need particular caution. If your dog has pain, an injury, a recent procedure, a known medical condition, or you are unsure whether touch is safe, ask your veterinarian before beginning. VCA advises that rehabilitation massage follow a veterinary examination and complete diagnosis; incorrect technique can cause or worsen pain, muscle spasms, or secondary injuries.
Massage may complement veterinary care, but it does not replace an examination, treatment, or prescribed medication. A veterinarian can advise whether massage is appropriate and, when needed, coordinate care with a qualified canine massage or veterinary rehabilitation professional.

What to notice during routine touch
Gentle touch may help you notice a new area of sensitivity or a change in the muscles or soft tissues, but it cannot tell you what caused a change or diagnose a condition. If you notice new pain, swelling, sensitivity, or another concerning change, stop touching the area and contact your veterinarian.
