For temporary low-strand designs, baiting can encourage deer to touch an electrified strand and learn to avoid it. Oklahoma State Extension describes a single electrified wire with conductive tabs baited with peanut butter as a conditioning approach. Use any baiting method safely and in accordance with local requirements and equipment instructions.
Electric-fence setup and maintenance
- Identify likely deer entry points and decide what portion of the field needs protection.
- Install the fence before crop emergence where feasible.
- Choose a design suited to the site, such as visible polytape, a low-strand temporary fence, or a more substantial multi-strand layout.
- Keep vegetation from contacting and shorting wires; mow or manage growth as needed.
- Inspect the fence regularly and repair damage, including problems caused by fallen branches.
- Reassess performance if deer keep testing the fence, especially in large fields with little other forage nearby.
University of Maryland Extension cautions that temporary fences may work better on smaller areas; large fields without other forage may see more fence-testing and damage. A more substantial multi-strand or two-tiered system may be worth evaluating where the desired protection justifies its installation and maintenance demands.

Do deer repellents protect soybean plants?
Repellents can be considered as a supplement, but they are not a dependable stand-alone guarantee. NC State Extension reports that many repellents evaluated in North Carolina provided limited soybean yield protection. University of Maryland Extension describes variable results, including a local multi-year study in which repellents paid for themselves and labor in the first study year but were less effective in the second. That study experience is not a universal forecast.
Seedlings are vulnerable, and product may need reapplication as plants grow or rain removes it. Check the current product label for permitted application sites and restrictions before use. Some products discussed by University of Maryland Extension are not labeled for food crops and may be appropriate only around crop perimeters; do not assume that permission applies to other products.

When is tall passive fencing practical?
A tall passive fence may make sense for a small or high-value area where the cost of exclusion is justified. For ordinary row-crop acreage, Oklahoma State Extension says exclusion fencing can be too expensive and usually not viable. Compare the likely benefit with the full installation and maintenance burden before committing to a large perimeter.
