Introduce a foster puppy to your resident dog gradually: prepare separate spaces, start with a calm meeting outdoors on neutral ground, and supervise every interaction. Keep the dogs apart when you cannot watch them, and ask the foster organization and your veterinarian about the puppy’s health and safe social contact before arranging introductions.
Before the puppy arrives, plan for space and health
Ask the shelter or rescue what is known about the puppy’s behavior around dogs, vaccination history, disease exposure, and parasite prevention. Ask whether a meet-and-greet can be arranged. Your veterinarian can advise which contact is appropriate given the puppy’s health records and local disease risks.
Consider both dogs’ temperaments, health, activity levels, and experience with puppies. A shy adult may find an energetic puppy overwhelming, while a confident adult may overwhelm a timid puppy. If your resident dog has a history of aggression, keep the dogs separated and seek qualified guidance before allowing close contact.
Set up separate resting areas before bringing the puppy home. A crate, exercise pen, or dog gate can help you manage access and give each dog a break, but barriers do not replace supervision. Plan separate feeding locations, and put away toys, chews, and treats that could prompt guarding.

Make the first meeting low-pressure
Start with a shelter meet-and-greet if available
A meeting arranged by the rescue can help you observe how the dogs respond to one another before the puppy comes home. Follow the organization’s instructions and do not treat one calm meeting as proof that the dogs are ready to share space freely.
Meet outdoors on neutral ground
For the first introduction, choose a calm outdoor area that neither dog treats as its territory. Walk them in the same direction with enough distance to avoid forcing a face-to-face greeting. Let them notice or ignore one another at their own pace, and reward calm behavior. If either dog looks worried, increase the distance or end the session. Avoid making the doorway or home threshold their first greeting place.

- A win-win solution: The FXW Dog Playpen is designed to bring a win-win solution to you and your lovely dog. Different from a narrow enclosure cage or kennel, the FXW dog pen provides a spacious semi-open activity area specifically for your dog. Your dog will have fun in its safe and sturdy kingdom. Meanwhile, you can take a real break and be truly relaxed without worrying about your beloved pet. Fun, Relaxation and Well-being is the orientation of the FXW team.
- Unlock your freedom, savor the moment: The stakes are designed with rounded ball tops to protect the dog's claws from injury. The rods are easily inserted into the ground for greater stability and rigidity, which won't collapse when the dog leans against them. Also, the automatic gravity-actioned locking mechanism will ensure you can open and close the door smoothly and reduces the chance of dogs unlocking by themselves. All of this is designed for absolute safety, so you can really relax.
- Super easy to assemble: It won’t take you more than 5 minutes to assemble these portable dog fences as well as pack them away due to the rod-connected design. Meanwhile, panels can be added or removed freely to give you a fully flexible area and arrange the dog pen in any shape you need.
- Multi-scenario use: The FXW dog playpen features a powder coating that will help protect against rust and extend its life, which makes it ideal for RV camping, traveling, or for use in the yard. When used indoors, we recommend placing it on a dog pad or carpet to prevent the rods from scratching the floor, or please try our new floor protectors or dog pee pad for the same purpose.
Manage the first days at home
After the outdoor introduction, bring the dogs inside calmly and keep all contact supervised. Use a gate, pen, or separate rooms to provide rest and prevent the puppy from repeatedly pestering the resident dog. Feed them separately and keep high-value possessions put away. Maintain your resident dog’s usual routine and make time for one-on-one attention.
Keep the dogs in separate rooms or secure resting spaces whenever you cannot directly supervise them, including at bedtime at first. VCA’s foster guidance recommends supervising interactions and play for the first few weeks and only considering unsupervised time after a few weeks without incident. Treat that as cautious guidance, not a universal timetable: follow the rescue’s rules and the dogs’ individual behavior.

Read their behavior instead of forcing friendship
Relaxed curiosity or a play invitation may mean the dogs are comfortable enough for carefully increased access, but progress should depend on what both dogs show you. Turning away or walking off is a request for space. Let the dog disengage rather than following or forcing a greeting.
Make more space or separate the dogs if you see tense posture, a low tail, shaking, raised hair, persistent barking, lunging, snapping, or biting. Do not punish growling: it communicates discomfort. Calmly interrupt repeated puppy harassment and give the adult dog a break. If either dog remains distressed or behavior escalates, maintain separation.

Account for the puppy’s health and socialization needs
A foster puppy may have an incomplete or unknown health history. Ask the rescue what vaccinations and parasite checks have been completed, what disease exposure is known, and what contact is appropriate. Then follow your veterinarian’s advice about safe introductions and local risks.
Carefully selected contact with a known household dog is different from exposure to unknown dogs or public areas that may be contaminated. There is no single quarantine duration established for every foster puppy and household; use individualized veterinary guidance rather than relying on a fixed number of days.
