How do fish scales protect fish?
Many fish scales are layered structures in the dermis. Mineralized components can contribute to resistance to puncture, while collagen-rich layers and the arrangement of the scales affect how the structure responds to force. Overlap and flexibility can help protect underlying tissue without creating a rigid shell that prevents movement.
In an engineering composite inspired by teleost fish, scale bending, scale rotation, tissue shear, and tissue constraint contributed to protection of an underlying surface. MIT thesis author Ashley Renée Browning described these as mechanisms governing the composite’s protective ability. This model helps explain possible mechanical principles; it is not a direct measurement of every living fish.
How do fish scales vary?
Scales are not identical across fish species or even across different body locations on the same fish. A comparison of carp, tarpon, and arapaima found differences in scale thickness, reinforcement, number of layers, and the arrangement of collagen-rich plies. In that study, successive plies in carp and tarpon scales rotated by 75 degrees, while arapaima scales had a cross-ply arrangement with a 90-degree rotation. These findings describe those species and samples, not a universal template.

The outer limiting layer is another structural feature studied for its contribution to puncture resistance. A comparison of carp, tarpon, and arapaima found differences in surface morphology and mineral-to-collagen characteristics. Tarpon had the hardest limiting layer in that comparison, followed by carp and arapaima; this ranking should not be treated as a general ranking of fish armor.
Do fish scales help fish swim faster?
Fish scales can provide protection while retaining flexibility needed for locomotion. Murcia Sanchez and colleagues summarized this balance in their 2017 study: “Fish scales exhibit a unique balance of flexibility, strength and toughness, which is essential to provide protection without encumbering locomotion.”
This evidence does not show that scales universally increase speed, reduce drag, or save energy. Those claims would need to be tied to a particular species and experiment. Scale architecture differs among species, and the studies described here do not establish one swimming advantage for all fish.

How do fish scales grow?
Scale structure can differ by body location, including thickness and the arrangement or quantity of reinforcing layers. The comparative research described here does not establish a general account of growth rings or whether scales can reliably be used to estimate a fish’s age, so those claims should not be generalized from this evidence.

Can fish grow their scales back?
Fish scales can regenerate, but the strongest specific evidence in this dossier comes from a laboratory study of common carp. Ghods and colleagues examined regenerated scales after approximately one year of development and growth. At that point, regenerated scales had significantly lower strength, strain to fracture, and toughness than original scales from the same fish.
The carp study compared fish held at 10°C and 20°C. Regenerated scales from fish held at 20°C had significantly greater values for those mechanical properties than regenerated scales from fish held at 10°C. These temperatures and the approximately one-year period describe the study conditions, not a universal regeneration schedule or care instruction.

The regenerated carp scales had a highly mineralized outer layer but lacked a distinct limiting layer and external elasmodine, and had fewer plies in the basal layer than original scales. The authors concluded that “a mineralized layer develops preferentially during scale regeneration with the topology needed for protection, prior to the development of other qualities.” This helps explain why replacement coverage may develop before all the mechanical qualities of a mature scale.
Why do fish scales not make fish invulnerable?
Scales are part of a structure whose protective performance depends on its materials and architecture. The studied species differed in scale thickness, layering, mineralized outer structures, and measured mechanical properties. Protection therefore should not be described as identical across fish or as absolute.
The broader lesson is that architecture matters alongside ingredients. Research on fish scales has informed bio-inspired engineering, but an engineered composite inspired by fish scales is not evidence that every fish has the same structure or performance.
