Why help is especially useful now
The October 1 local report said YHS was over capacity after several animal cases arrived close together. One hoarding case brought 14 dogs to the shelter the day before the report. Staff found temporary space and contacted other rescues while continuing to provide food, medication, clean kennels, and attention with the same number of workers.
YHS’s November 2025 newsletter gives a broader sense of the shelter’s workload: the organization reported taking in over 3,000 animals in 2024 and said it was on track to take in more than 4,000 in 2025. These are YHS-reported figures, not independent counts. In her newsletter letter as Director of Shelter Operations, Kelli Peal described YHS as “a dedicated, compassionate organization committed to growth, healing, and second chances.”

Other ways to help YHS
Adopt, foster, volunteer, or share pets
The local report names adopting, fostering, volunteering, donating, and sharing a shelter pet online as ways to help. YHS’s November 2025 newsletter describes foster care for animals needing recovery, socialization, or a temporary home. It says YHS provides foster families with food, supplies, medical care, and 24/7 support; foster caregivers provide a safe indoor space, basic care, socialization, and transport to veterinary appointments.
The newsletter also describes volunteer transport drivers who move animals to rescue partners, foster homes, and adoption centers. Its stated eligibility requirements include being at least 21, having a valid driver’s license and insurance, owning or having access to a reliable vehicle, and completing an application and waiver.
