The Balinese is a longhaired variety of the Siamese, known for its blue eyes, pointed coat, silky single coat, and plumed tail. It is typically social, talkative, active, and closely bonded to its people, so it suits a household able to offer regular companionship and play better than one where a cat will be left alone for long periods. Its coat is relatively easy to maintain for a longhaired cat, but it still needs routine combing and veterinary care.
Despite its name, the breed was developed in the United States, not Bali. A good home provides daily interaction, climbing and scratching opportunities, play, and positive-reinforcement training.

What is the history of the Balinese?
Longhaired kittens appeared in Siamese litters, and breeders began developing the Balinese as a separate breed in the United States during the 1940s. The longhair trait is generally understood to be recessive, so it can appear in kittens even when parent cats have short coats.

Helen Smith and other breeders helped establish the type. The name refers to the cats’ graceful movement and appearance, which reminded breeders of Balinese dancers; the breed did not originate in Bali. Recognition dates depend on the association: CFA accepted the breed for championship competition in 1970, while TICA recognized it for competition in 1979. CFA’s breed history and standard and TICA’s breed profile provide association-specific information.
Color recognition also varies among registries. CFA describes traditional Balinese colors as seal, chocolate, blue, and lilac points; its Javanese division covers additional colors and patterns and was administratively merged into the Balinese breed structure in 2008. Check the relevant association’s standard rather than treating one color list as universal.
Appearance and coat
The Balinese has long, tapering lines and a balanced, athletic build. Its body is svelte and muscular, not frail or bulky. CFA emphasizes a long wedge-shaped head, straight profile, large pointed ears, and almond-shaped eyes. The breed shares the Siamese type, with blue eyes and a pointed pattern in breed standards.
Its coat is the defining difference from the short-haired Siamese. It is typically:

- Medium in length and close to the body
- A single coat with relatively little undercoat

Balinese cats have a color-point pattern: the ears, face, legs, paws, and tail are darker than the central body. Kittens may appear paler at first, with point color developing as they mature.
Adult size is commonly described as medium. TICA gives approximate adult weights of 5–8 pounds for females and 8–12 pounds for males; these are estimates, not targets or quality scores. Body condition, muscle, age, sex, and individual build matter more than matching a number on a scale. Keep the cat lean and muscular with veterinary guidance.

Balinese temperament: affectionate, vocal, and busy
Balinese cats are typically social and want to be involved in household life. Many follow their people, initiate play, or vocalize for attention. CFA says Balinese tend to be less talkative and have softer voices than Siamese cats; this is a relative comparison, not a promise that a Balinese will be quiet.
Intelligence is part of both the appeal and the responsibility. A Balinese may enjoy retrieving toys, learning simple behaviors, or solving food puzzles. Curiosity can also lead to mischief when there is no appropriate outlet. Companionship and daily enrichment are important parts of care.
How to keep a Balinese occupied
- Schedule regular interactive play rather than relying only on toys left on the floor.
- Use teaser or wand toys for chasing and pouncing.
- Rotate toys to renew interest.
- Offer food puzzles or scatter-feed part of the daily ration when appropriate.
- Teach simple behaviors with small rewards and positive reinforcement.
- Provide sturdy scratching posts and elevated places to observe the room.
- Secure cords, small swallowable objects, toxic plants, and other hazards.
TICA lists toys, fetch, cat trees, teaser toys, agility, and leash training as possible activities. A teaser toy or cat tree can support play and climbing, but no product replaces interaction. Supervise string-like toys and put them away after use.
Are Balinese cats good with children and dogs?
They may do well with respectful children or cat-friendly dogs, especially when introductions are gradual and the cat has escape routes and elevated safe spaces. Teach children not to chase, restrain, corner, or disturb a cat that is eating or sleeping. Introduce dogs calmly and under control rather than allowing them to pursue the cat.
Breed tendencies are not guarantees. An individual Balinese may prefer a quiet adult household, and an adopted cat’s history may differ from that of a well-socialized kitten.
Grooming and routine care
The Balinese is comparatively low-maintenance for a longhaired cat. TICA describes its silky single coat as rarely tangling or matting; routine combing helps remove loose hair. Weekly brushing is TICA’s recommendation, though each cat’s coat and tolerance may call for adjustments. Gentle, brief sessions are preferable to waiting until the coat is tangled or the cat is distressed. A metal cat comb is an optional basic tool for combing the coat and checking the plumed tail.

Care checklist
- Nails: Trim the tips when needed, introducing handling gradually and avoiding the quick.
- Teeth: Use cat-appropriate dental products if the cat will cooperate. Home care does not replace veterinary examinations.
- Ears: Check for excess wax, odor, redness, discharge, or persistent scratching; avoid inserting objects into the ear canal.
- Weight: Monitor body condition and adjust portions with veterinary guidance.
- Parasites: Use prevention recommended by a veterinarian for the cat’s location and lifestyle.
- Examinations: Maintain regular veterinary visits and keep preventive care current.
Exercise, feeding, and home setup
A Balinese can live in an apartment or a house. Floor space alone is not the important factor: the cat needs safe ways to climb, scratch, watch, investigate, and interact. Provide:
- A stable scratching post suited to the cat’s preferred scratching direction
- Secure cat trees, shelves, or window perches
- Interactive toys and food puzzles
- Comfortable resting places near, but not directly in, the busiest areas
- Protected windows and balconies so elevated access does not create a fall hazard
A securely installed cat tree or wall perch can add vertical territory. Stability and safe installation matter more than height. Anchor scratching surfaces so the cat can stretch and pull without tipping them over.
Feed a nutritionally complete diet appropriate for the cat’s life stage. Portions should reflect body condition, activity, age, health, and the food’s calorie density. Activity does not make a cat immune to obesity. A veterinarian can help choose a diet and determine whether treats or puzzle feeding should come from the daily ration.
Balinese health considerations
TICA describes Balinese cats as generally healthy but notes possible anesthesia sensitivity and susceptibility to amyloidosis. These are breed-level cautions, not diagnoses or quantified predictions for an individual cat. The research desk found no named prevalence studies or measured disease rates for Balinese cats, so no percentage should be inferred from these cautions.

Amyloidosis involves abnormal protein deposits that can damage organs. Siamese-family breed information identifies amyloidosis as a concern to discuss with a veterinarian. A breed label alone cannot diagnose the condition, and owners should ask a veterinarian what symptoms or investigation are appropriate for their individual cat.
Anesthesia and inherited-disease discussions
Tell the veterinary team that your cat is a Balinese or has Siamese ancestry before surgery, dental procedures, or other anesthesia. Sensitivity is a caution for veterinary planning, not a reason to assume anesthesia cannot be used safely. Share the cat’s medical history, previous anesthesia experiences, medications, and relevant family history.

CFA notes that Balinese may be predisposed to conditions associated with Siamese ancestry and that many breeders use genetic screening in breeding programs. Testing choices depend on the cat’s pedigree and whether the purpose is breeding, parentage verification, or clinical investigation. Discuss relevant testing with a responsible breeder or veterinarian.
Questions to ask before bringing one home
- Can I see veterinary records, vaccination information, and the adoption or purchase contract?
- What health problems have occurred in the parents, siblings, and older relatives?
- What screening was performed, by whom, and what were the results?
- Has the cat had anesthesia before, and were there any complications?
- How was the kitten socialized to people, handling, household sounds, and other animals?
- What diet, parasite prevention, and follow-up care does the breeder or rescue recommend?
How long do Balinese cats live?
TICA lists a life expectancy of 10 years or more and notes that some Balinese cats have been known to live for more than 20 years. These are broad estimates, not a guarantee or a claim that 20 years is typical. Genetics, preventive care, nutrition, indoor safety, environment, and disease all affect an individual cat’s longevity.
Are Balinese cats hypoallergenic?
No cat should be considered completely hypoallergenic. Do not assume a silky single coat means a person with allergies will have fewer symptoms. Individual allergic responses vary, and the available breed information does not establish a reliable test or guarantee of reduced reaction. Anyone with allergies should spend meaningful time around Balinese cats before committing and discuss symptom management with a medical professional.
Finding a Balinese kitten or adult cat
Balinese cats may take time to find. Contact multiple breeders, attend cat shows, or consider an adult retired breeding cat or adoption. Breed appearance alone does not prove identity: verify registration claims, records, parentage information, and health documentation.
Official registry resources can be useful starting points. Readers can find Balinese information through TICA and investigate its breeder directory. Directory inclusion or membership is a discovery signal, not a guarantee of health, temperament, breeding quality, or ethical conduct. CFA also provides breed information and registry resources.
A responsible breeder should discuss inherited conditions in the family, provide veterinary documentation, explain socialization practices, offer written contract terms, and answer questions without pressuring you to pay immediately. Rescue and adoption are also worthwhile alternatives. If a shelter or rescue identifies a cat as Balinese, ask what supports that identification and focus on the individual cat’s health, temperament, and needs.

Is a Balinese the right cat for you?
Choose a Balinese if you want a cat likely to:
- Seek frequent human interaction
- Communicate vocally
- Play and climb regularly
- Learn games or simple training
- Follow household members and participate in routines
- Have a longhaired appearance without an intensive, dense-undercoat grooming routine
Think carefully before choosing one if you need a cat that can routinely entertain itself in an empty home, rarely vocalizes, avoids climbing, or prefers little interaction. Individual cats differ, but it is sensible to expect a Balinese to need companionship and enrichment and then assess the particular cat’s personality.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Balinese cat a long-haired Siamese?
Yes. TICA describes the Balinese as a longhaired variety of the Siamese and places it in the Siamese Breed Group. Breed naming and recognition are set by cat associations.
Do Balinese cats shed a lot?
They shed, but the fine, silky single coat rarely tangles or mats, according to TICA. Routine combing removes loose hair; weekly brushing is TICA’s recommendation.
Can a Balinese cat be left alone during the workday?
Individual cats vary, but Balinese cats are typically social and active. They should not be left alone for long periods without considering their need for companionship, play, and enrichment.

TICA notes possible anesthesia sensitivity and susceptibility to amyloidosis. These are breed-level cautions, not diagnoses or quantified risk estimates. Discuss the cat’s history and appropriate care with a veterinarian.
How much grooming does a Balinese need?
The coat is relatively easy to maintain for a longhaired cat. TICA recommends weekly brushing, and regular nail care, ear checks, dental care, and veterinary visits are also important.
The Bottom Line
The Balinese is a graceful, relatively easy-to-groom longhaired Siamese variety, but it is not a low-interaction pet. Its best home offers regular social contact, play, vertical territory, scratching facilities, and preventive veterinary care. Ask careful health questions before bringing one home, avoid promises about allergy response, and judge each cat by its individual temperament and medical history.
