For many healthy small dogs and healthy adults, sharing a bed can be reasonable—but it is not right for every dog or household. Consider health risks, behavior, sleep quality, allergies, and whether your dog can get on and off the bed safely. VCA Animal Hospitals says co-sleeping should be fine when neither dog nor person has health or behavioral issues that make it unhealthy; that is conditional guidance, not a guarantee for every household.
What risks should you consider?
Germs and parasites
Dogs can sometimes carry germs that make people sick. The CDC recommends routine veterinary care to help keep dogs healthy and prevent disease spread, and advises washing your hands after handling a dog, its food, waste, or supplies. VCA recommends discussing parasite prevention with your veterinarian and washing bed linens regularly.
A 2022 preliminary study examined potential zoonotic pathogens in pets sleeping with their owners and identified a possible transmission risk, particularly during direct contact. It does not establish how likely illness is in an individual household. The CDC journal review “Zoonoses in the Bedroom” describes reported infections linked to close pet contact and says transmission through close contact is uncommon with healthy pets. It is a review of documented cases, not an estimate of the absolute risk for a healthy person sharing a bed with a small dog.
People at higher risk of serious illness
The CDC identifies children under five, people with weakened immune systems, adults 65 and older, and in many cases pregnant women as groups at higher risk of serious zoonotic illness. Being in one of these groups does not mean that every person must avoid dogs, but it is a reason to ask a healthcare provider and veterinarian for advice tailored to the household.

Allergies and sleep
Dander, dust, and outdoor pollen carried on a dog’s coat can worsen allergy symptoms and linger on bedding. Washing linens and reducing allergens may help, but these steps cannot be assumed to eliminate symptoms. A dog that moves, kicks, scratches, or snores can also wake you; some people find a dog comforting, while others sleep worse.
When is bed-sharing unsafe or uncomfortable?
Bed guarding or startle reactions
The CDC advises: “Do not disturb a dog while it is eating, sleeping, or caring for puppies.” A sleeping dog that is startled may react, and a dog that guards the bed or a family member forcefully can make sharing unsafe. If your dog shows guarding or other concerning behavior, keep it off the bed and consult your veterinarian about next steps.

Pain, age, and getting on or off the bed
Small size alone does not make bed-sharing safe. An arthritic dog may have trouble climbing, and older dogs may experience incontinence. A veterinarian can advise you if your dog has pain or mobility changes. Depending on the dog’s needs, options may include lifting a small dog or using steps or a ramp; do not assume an aid is appropriate without considering the individual dog.

|---|---|---|
| Access and mobility | May require safe, comfortable access; climbing can be difficult for a dog with pain or mobility limits. | A floor-level bed avoids climbing onto the human bed. |
| Your sleep | Your dog’s movement, scratching, or snoring may wake you; some people find the arrangement comforting. | Can create more separation if the dog’s movement disrupts your sleep. |
| Allergies | Dander and material on the coat can collect on bedding. | Separating sleeping areas may reduce direct contact with your bedding, but does not guarantee relief. |
| Behavior | Not a good choice if the dog guards the bed or reacts when disturbed. | Provides a separate resting place; do not disturb the dog while it sleeps. |
| Household health | Close contact may increase exposure to germs or parasites, though documented close-contact transmission is uncommon with healthy pets. | Reduces bed contact, but routine veterinary care and hygiene remain important. |
VCA reports that about 62% of small dogs are allowed to sleep with their human families, compared with 41% of medium-sized dogs and 32% of large dogs. The page does not state a date for those figures or identify the underlying study in the retrieved text; they describe reported practice, not safety. The CDC estimates that about 38% of U.S. households have one or more dogs, which is household context—not a bed-sharing statistic.
