The right crate for a small dog is sized to the dog’s measurements and chosen for how the dog behaves and how you’ll use it—not selected by breed label alone. Measure your dog, check the crate’s usable interior, and then compare wire, plastic, and fabric designs for fit, ventilation, cleanup, and travel needs.
How to choose the right crate size
Measure your dog standing naturally. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recommends measuring height from the top of the head to the bottom of the feet and length from the nose to the tip of the tail, then adding 3 to 4 inches to each measurement. This is AKC’s practical sizing guideline, not a formal crate standard.
- Measure your dog’s standing height and nose-to-tail length.
- Add 3 to 4 inches to both measurements to estimate the crate’s needed height and length.
- Compare those figures with the crate’s usable interior dimensions, if listed. Exterior dimensions do not tell you how much room your dog has inside.
- Check that your dog can sit, stand, and lie down comfortably in the crate.
Breed-based size charts can be a rough starting point, but dogs of the same breed vary. Your dog’s measurements and normal resting posture are the more useful guide.
Choosing a crate for a puppy
You can buy a crate sized for your puppy’s expected adult size if it comes with an adjustable divider. Set the divider to limit the puppy’s initial usable space, then move it as the puppy grows. Cornell’s guidance notes that too much space can let a puppy sleep at one end and toilet at the other during potty training.

Wire, plastic, fabric, or furniture-style?
No crate style is best for every small dog. Match the design to your dog’s chewing and escape behavior, the intended setting, and how much airflow, visibility, portability, and easy cleaning matter to you.
| Style | Useful strengths | Tradeoffs and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| Wire or metal | Good airflow and visibility; sturdy; many models fold for storage, and some include an adjustable divider. | The open design is less visually enclosed. Check assembly, durability, and latch security. If you use a cover, do not let it block needed ventilation. |
| Hard plastic | Durable, easy to clean, and can also serve as a travel carrier. | Bulkier to store. For air travel, confirm the current construction and size requirements for your particular airline and itinerary. |
| Soft-sided fabric or mesh | Lightweight, foldable, and easy to carry; may suit short trips or calm small dogs already comfortable in a crate. | Less durable than hard-sided options. Chewing, scratching, or escape attempts can damage the crate or injure a dog, so it is a poor default for an untrained or destructive dog. |
| Furniture-style wood | Can function as an end table and blend into a room. | Typically heavier, more expensive, harder to clean, and requires assembly. Appearance should not take priority over fit, ventilation, or secure construction. |
Which style fits your dog and routine?
- For visibility and airflow at home: consider a wire crate, checking that latches are secure and that any cover still allows ventilation.
- For a durable crate that may also travel: consider hard plastic, then verify that it fits the actual trip’s rules if flying.
- For carrying a calm, crate-trained dog on a short trip: a soft-sided crate may be convenient, provided your dog does not chew, scratch, or try to escape.
- For furniture-like appearance: a wood design may suit the room, but weigh its cleaning and portability tradeoffs against the dog’s needs.
Compare the interior fit, your dog’s behavior, home or travel use, ventilation and visibility, cleaning, storage, divider availability, and appearance. Do not assume a product label or style alone establishes that a crate is safe or suitable.

What safety features and habits matter?
Safety depends on both the crate and how it is used. Choose a crate with adequate ventilation and a closure that stays securely latched. Remove your dog’s collar before crating: the AKC’s guidance states, “For safety, always take your dog’s collar off when they’re in the crate.”
Introduce the crate gradually and associate it with positive experiences; it should be a management and training aid, not punishment. A crate does not cure separation anxiety. Cornell advises against forcing a highly stressed dog to remain confined. Signs of distress can include excessive barking or vocalizing, pacing, panting, eliminating, or drooling. If you see these signs, consider whether a larger pet-proofed area, exercise pen, pet sitter, veterinarian, or qualified trainer is more appropriate for your dog.

Choose a travel carrier for the specific trip, your dog’s measurements, and your dog’s temperament. Check the current airline or FAA requirements in advance and confirm dimensions and construction for your itinerary. In-cabin requirements can vary, and a generic “airline approved” label does not guarantee that a carrier will be accepted for your flight.

A hard-sided carrier may work for both home and travel, while a light soft-sided crate may be easier to carry for a calm dog already accustomed to one. Whichever you consider, verify the actual carrier’s fit and the rules that apply to your travel plans rather than relying on a general product description.
