You cannot reliably tell Alabama Rot from an ordinary cut, bite, sting, or other sore just by looking at it. Alabama Rot is rare, but it can damage the kidneys and become life-threatening. Contact a veterinarian about an unexplained sore, and seek prompt advice if your dog is also vomiting, eating less, unusually tired, or drinking or urinating differently.
Can you tell Alabama Rot from a normal cut or sore?
No. A red patch, swelling, cut, scrape, or open sore is not enough to confirm or rule out Alabama Rot. The disease’s skin lesions can look like ordinary wounds, and many sores have other causes. A veterinarian needs to assess the whole dog; photographs or a home checklist cannot make the distinction reliably.
Alabama Rot is the common name for cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (CRGV), a rare disease that affects small blood vessels in the skin and, in some cases, the kidneys. UK government guidance says its cause is unknown. The UK government describes it as rare and potentially life-threatening.
What the sore’s location and other clues can—and cannot—tell you
| What you notice | What it may mean | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| A cut, scrape, bite, sting, red patch, swelling, or open sore | Several causes are possible; CRGV is one rare possibility among them. | Appearance alone cannot diagnose CRGV or safely rule it out. |
| A lesion on a paw, digit, foot, or lower leg | These are commonly described locations for CRGV lesions. Lesions may also occur on the head, muzzle, tongue, flank, belly, or elsewhere. | Location is not a diagnosis. |
| Vomiting, reduced appetite, tiredness, or changed drinking or urination | These may signal kidney involvement or another illness and call for prompt veterinary advice. | These signs are not unique to CRGV. |
| Recent muddy woodland walks, particularly in winter or spring | UK guidance reports these as associations with CRGV. | A walk does not prove exposure or causation; having no such history does not diagnose or clear a dog. |
Other explanations include traumatic wounds, cuts, stings, bites, and other skin problems. These examples are not a complete list of possible causes, so do not use them to decide that a lesion is harmless.

When to contact a veterinarian
Contact your vet about an unexpected or unexplained sore, particularly if it is changing or your dog seems unwell. Do not wait for kidney-related signs to appear before asking for advice: the time between skin lesions and other signs can vary.
Seek prompt veterinary advice if your dog has a sore and is vomiting, eating less, unusually tired, or drinking or urinating differently. Those signs can have causes other than CRGV, but a veterinarian should assess them.

What to tell the clinic and what the vet may check
When you call, share practical observations that can help the clinic assess urgency:
- When you first noticed the sore, where it is, and whether it has changed.
- Whether you know of an injury, bite, or sting.
- Recent walks and conditions, including muddy woodland walks.
- Any change in appetite or energy, vomiting, or changes in drinking or urination.
These details help guide an assessment; they are not a home diagnostic test. A veterinarian may examine the lesion and use blood and urine tests to assess kidney function. Skin or kidney biopsy may be considered, but confirmation has limitations. The Royal Veterinary College explains the diagnostic challenges and the range of lesions associated with CRGV.

How serious is Alabama Rot?
CRGV can affect the skin alone or involve the kidneys. Kidney involvement can be life-threatening, while a skin lesion by itself does not establish that the kidneys are affected. Your veterinarian can assess the dog and decide what testing or care is appropriate.
The Royal Veterinary College reported that approximately 30% of dogs clinically diagnosed with CRGV at its Queen Mother Hospital for Animals had survived as of March 2024. This is a dated figure from a specialist referral hospital, not a general-population survival rate or an individual dog’s prognosis; referral-centre cases may differ from cases seen in general practice. RVC’s explanation includes that qualification.

Can washing muddy paws prevent Alabama Rot?
Washing muddy paws after walks has been suggested as a reasonable precaution, but the evidence does not establish that it prevents CRGV. There is no proven preventive method identified in the UK veterinary advice cited here, and the cause remains unknown. Animal Trust notes both the limited evidence for prevention and the suggestion to wash dogs after walks.
