Move your small dog from your bed to a crate gradually: begin with the crate beside your bed, reward your dog for choosing to enter, and build calm, closed-door time in short steps before using it overnight. Don’t force an abrupt switch. If your dog panics, stop and reassess rather than trying to make it “cry it out.”
Make the crate feel safe before bedtime
Put an appropriately sized crate near your bed and secure its door open so it cannot swing shut unexpectedly. Let your dog approach and investigate at its own pace. Reward small signs of interest—looking at the crate, walking toward it, or stepping inside—with a treat or praise. Never push or pull your dog in.
When your dog is comfortable approaching, toss a treat inside or offer a meal near the opening. Move the food farther in only as your dog becomes willing to follow it. If your dog hesitates, make the next attempt easier: leave the door open and reward an approach without asking for entry. The goal is voluntary entry and a positive association, not getting the dog trapped. See the American Kennel Club’s step-by-step crate-training guidance.
Build up to a closed door in small steps
Once your dog willingly enters, reward it while it is inside. Practice moving the door slightly, then opening it again. Gradually work up to closing it briefly while you stay nearby, then extend the time only while your dog remains comfortable. Use treats, a meal, or a food-stuffed enrichment toy if appropriate for your dog; supervise new toys to make sure they are safe for its chewing habits.

Move from your bed to the crate at night
When your dog can rest calmly in the crate with the door closed for a suitable period, use it at bedtime in your bedroom or nearby. Keeping the crate close can help a puppy signal that it needs to go outside and can help an older dog avoid associating the crate with sudden social isolation. The Humane Society of the United States advises moving the crate only after the dog is “sleeping comfortably through the night with the crate near you.” Then move it gradually toward the place you want it to stay. Read its Crate Training 101 guidance.

Before bed, give your dog an opportunity to exercise and relieve itself. If a puppy wakes and whines, consider a bathroom need: take it outside quietly and purposefully, then return to the usual sleep routine. Avoid turning the trip into playtime.
What to do when your dog whines
Whining does not have one universal meaning. A puppy may need to eliminate; a dog that has just been confined may be showing stress; and a dog that settled before making noise may be bored, hungry, or asking to go outside. Check your dog’s needs and behavior rather than assuming the noise is manipulation. The AKC discusses these different possibilities in its advice on how to crate train a dog.

- If the noise starts soon after confinement and your dog cannot settle, shorten the next session or go back to a step it can manage calmly.
- If a puppy may need to toilet, take it out for a quiet, purposeful bathroom trip and then resume the sleep routine.
- Do not scold, shout, or bang on the crate. These responses can add fear without addressing the cause.
Recognize panic and choose a safer alternative
Stop crate training and seek qualified help if your dog shows signs of panic, such as heavy panting, excessive salivation, frantic attempts to escape, or persistent howling or barking. A crate can make confinement-related distress worse for some dogs. The ASPCA’s separation-anxiety guidance describes distress signs and the need to address serious anxiety.
In the meantime, a puppy-proofed room or gated area may be a safer sleeping space. Ask your veterinarian for guidance or seek help from a veterinary behaviorist or qualified trainer, especially if your dog cannot safely tolerate confinement. A crate is a useful option only when your dog can use it safely and comfortably.

Choose a safe, suitable setup
- Size: Choose a crate appropriate for your individual dog, with room to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. A crate that is too small is uncomfortable; one that is much too large may make it easier for a puppy to toilet in one area and sleep in another.
- Location: Start in or near the bedroom, in a quiet, comfortable spot. Move it only after your dog sleeps comfortably there.
- Collar: Remove your dog’s collar while it is in the crate to reduce the risk of it catching on the crate.
- Bedding: Bedding is optional. Some puppies may toilet on soft, absorbent bedding or shred it, so introduce fabric only if it suits your dog.
- Crate use: Never use the crate as punishment or leave your dog confined longer than it can manage.
These safety considerations are covered in the AKC’s crate-training advice. Treats and enrichment toys can support training, but they are optional; the important step is to reward calm, voluntary progress.
