Start with your dog’s regular veterinarian: ask whether the practice offers boarding or can recommend a suitable facility or pet sitter. Then choose care that fits your dog’s health, routine, and behavior, and agree in writing on emergency contacts, treatment authority, and payment before you leave. Not every veterinary practice offers boarding, so confirm what it can provide.
Choose the type of care that fits your dog
There are three practical options: boarding through your regular veterinary practice if available, another boarding facility, or an in-home pet sitter. No arrangement is best for every dog. Match the provider to your dog’s medical needs, medication schedule, routine, and behavior.
| Option | What to check |
|---|---|
| Your regular veterinary practice | Ask whether it boards dogs, can coordinate care, or can recommend a provider. Clarify how routine and emergency veterinary care will be handled. |
| Another boarding facility | Visit if possible. Check cleanliness, security, appropriate space, supervision, and whether staff can meet your dog’s medical, behavioral, and daily-care needs. |
| In-home pet sitter | Confirm the sitter can reliably follow feeding, exercise, medication, and behavior instructions, and can contact you or a backup person if a problem arises. |
These selection considerations follow the American Animal Hospital Association’s boarding guidance and pet-sitter instructions.
Ask the right questions before booking
- Can the provider manage your dog’s conditions, medications, feeding schedule, exercise needs, and behavior triggers?
- What veterinary care is available, which clinic handles emergencies, and how will records be shared?
- Who will contact you, and who can make decisions if you cannot be reached?
- What are the provider’s current vaccination-documentation and other entry requirements?
- What dates are available, and how will transport, access to supplies, and communication work?
Many boarding facilities require proof of vaccination, but policies vary. Ask the specific provider what it requires rather than assuming one rule applies everywhere. Local licensing requirements, provider availability, and emergency-clinic hours can also differ.

Arrange care early and check the setting
Contact providers as soon as your travel dates are known. If you are considering boarding, visit the facility where possible and assess whether it is clean, secure, and suited to your dog. Ask how staff supervise dogs and accommodate individual needs; do not rely on a general description alone.
Before confirming, make sure the provider has agreed to the care your dog actually needs—not just that it accepts dogs. Discuss medication administration, health concerns, and behavior openly so you can decide whether the arrangement is workable.

Prepare a written handoff for the caregiver
Give the caregiver a concise written profile and routine, along with the supplies and records needed to follow it. AAHA’s 2025 pet-sitter guidance recommends leaving a visible emergency contact card. Include:
- Your dog’s name, age, breed, personality, triggers, medical conditions, diet, and a current photo.
- Meal amounts and times; exercise routine; medication names, timing, and administration instructions; and any places or situations to avoid.
- Where food, medications, leashes, and other supplies are stored.
- Your regular veterinarian’s contact details, the nearest 24-hour emergency clinic, your reliable contact information, and a nearby backup person.
- Relevant medical records and insurance details, if applicable.
- Clear instructions about symptoms that warrant action and what the caregiver should do if you cannot be reached.
Keep your dog’s collar ID tags and microchip registration information current. Pack the usual food and medication; familiar toys or a blanket may help keep the routine familiar. For emergency readiness, AAHA also suggests portable dishes, an extra collar and leash, and a stocked pet first-aid kit. Examples of kit supplies include gauze, tweezers, wound-cleaning supplies, self-adhering wrap, and a digital thermometer. A kit is not a substitute for veterinary care.

Agree on emergency authority and veterinary care
Before departure, identify who can authorize treatment if your dog needs care and you are unavailable, how that person can reach the veterinarian, and how urgent expenses will be paid. Give the caregiver a clear route to both your regular veterinarian and emergency care, and share relevant records. AAHA’s VCPR guidance describes continuity, emergency coverage, and medical records as parts of the veterinary relationship; a sitter should follow your veterinarian’s written instructions rather than make medical decisions independently.
For a senior dog, make the written plan especially explicit. The 2023 AAHA Senior Care Guidelines recommend documenting the owner’s contact information and time zone, sitter identity, decision authority, emergency payment plan, and a named person delegated to make healthcare decisions.
