A pet shelter adoption appointment usually involves an application or questionnaire, a conversation with an adoption counselor, time to meet the animal, and—if you decide to proceed—paperwork and payment. Bring photo ID and be ready to discuss your household and pet-care plans. Every shelter sets its own process, and taking a pet home the same day is possible but not guaranteed.
What happens during a shelter adoption appointment?
The order varies by organization. Some shelters accept walk-ins; others ask you to apply or book a meeting in advance. A typical visit may include these stages:
- Check in and complete or review an application. You may sign in, fill out a questionnaire, or have an application reviewed. Pasadena Humane describes walk-in sign-in and a questionnaire, while Humane Society of Westchester begins with a pre-adoption questionnaire. Humane Society of Atlantic County requires an approved application before an animal can leave with an adopter.
- Talk with an adoption counselor. Expect questions about your lifestyle, past experience with pets, household, resident animals, and what you are looking for. Share relevant details and ask what the shelter knows about the animal’s health, behavior, and care needs. ASPCA Pro’s 2020 Conversation-based Adoptions guidance describes open-ended conversations that help prospective adopters make informed decisions. Pasadena Humane and SPCA of Texas also describe counselor support and sharing known information about animals.
- Meet the animal. Staff may arrange a meeting in a shelter room or another setting. Use the time to learn about that individual pet and consider whether their needs fit your home. Rules for bringing household members or introducing resident pets vary, so ask before the appointment.
- Decide whether to proceed. If you and the shelter agree to move forward, you will complete adoption paperwork and pay the applicable fee. Ask what the fee includes and whether licensing or other local charges apply.
- Confirm the pickup plan. Check whether the animal is ready to leave, who needs to be present, and what you need to transport them safely. Some animals need additional care or sterilization before pickup; some organizations offer foster-to-adopt arrangements.
A meeting does not guarantee that the animal will remain available or that you can take them home immediately.
What should you bring?
Check the shelter’s instructions before you travel. Requirements differ, but this checklist covers items and information that may be needed:

- Government-issued photo ID. ASPCA’s New York City adoption center requires current photo identification and adopters to be at least 18; other organizations set their own eligibility rules.
- Payment and contact information. SPCA of Texas asks adopters for ID, contact information, and payment. Pasadena Humane lists accepted payment methods in its FAQ.
- Proof of address or housing permission, if requested. A shelter may ask for proof of address, a lease, or information about a landlord’s pet policy. Humane Society of Westchester lists proof of ownership or a lease showing the landlord’s pet policy among its requirements.
- Details about your household and current pets. Be prepared to explain who lives at home and share veterinary information for resident pets if requested. Ask whether household members should attend and whether resident animals should stay home or come for a planned introduction. Pasadena Humane recommends that household humans attend but asks adopters to leave resident pets at home; other shelters may arrange dog introductions.
- Safe transport equipment. ASPCA’s New York City center requires cats and kittens to leave in a secure carrier. Pasadena Humane asks adopters to bring a carrier for a cat or a collar or harness and leash for a dog when taking the animal home.
- A way to get the pet home. Make a transport plan even if the animal may not be ready to leave on appointment day.
Can you take a shelter pet home the same day?
Sometimes, but do not plan on it without confirming. Humane Society of Westchester says same-day take-home happens in most cases but is not guaranteed. Pasadena Humane asks adopters to be prepared to take an animal home that day and uses foster-to-adopt arrangements in some cases. Seattle Animal Shelter’s search-indexed guidance describes same-day take-home for most shelter pets, but notes that additional veterinary care or spay/neuter surgery can delay pickup.
Application verification, an animal’s medical readiness, and scheduling for pets in foster care can also affect timing. Ask the shelter whether the animal is ready, whether holds are possible, what approval steps remain, and when pickup could happen if it is delayed.

Questions to ask the adoption counselor
Use the conversation to clarify what you will need to know before deciding:
- What is known about this pet’s medical history, behavior, and day-to-day needs?
- Is the animal ready to go home today? If not, what needs to happen first, and when might pickup be possible?
- What does the adoption fee include? Are there local license charges or follow-up costs?
- Should household members attend? Should resident pets stay home or come for a planned introduction?
- What carrier, leash, harness, or other transport equipment is required?
- What records should I take home, and what follow-up care should I arrange?
Why appointment rules, fees, and take-home policies differ
There is no single adoption procedure or fee that applies to every shelter. The ASPCA Adoption Center in New York City describes walk-ins for many cats and dogs, appointments for small dogs, a suggested $150 adoption fee, and New York City dog-license charges. Pasadena Humane describes walk-in adoption hours and first-come, first-served adoptions. Humane Society of Westchester uses a pre-adoption questionnaire and scheduled meet-and-greets, and publishes fees that vary by species and age. These are examples of local policies, not national requirements or standard prices; check the organization’s current instructions before visiting.

To compare shelters or prepare for a particular visit, check how appointments work, which documents are required, who may attend, how resident-pet introductions are handled, what the fee includes, which transport items are needed, and how the shelter confirms an animal is ready to leave.
