Help your dog accept a carrier backpack by introducing it in small, voluntary steps and rewarding calm curiosity. Start with the open, empty carrier on the floor; build toward brief wear and short outings only while your dog stays comfortable. Don’t force your dog inside or zip the carrier before they are ready.

Before training, choose a suitable carrier

Match the carrier to how you plan to use it—such as walking, travel, or flying—and to your dog’s size and comfort. Check the manufacturer’s size and weight limits, ventilation, access, and secure closures. A wearable carrier should support a small dog comfortably against your body; your dog still needs room to rest in a position the carrier allows. The American Kennel Club’s carrier guidance discusses these considerations.

If you plan to fly, confirm the current requirements with the airline for your route. A product being described as “airline approved” does not guarantee acceptance by every airline or on every flight.

Introduce the backpack at your dog’s pace

1. Let your dog investigate

Put the open, empty backpack in a familiar room and let your dog approach it voluntarily. Reward looking at, sniffing, or moving toward it with a treat, praise, or play. Keep flaps and openings open. The goal is for the bag to become a familiar, pleasant object—not a cue that your dog must get inside.

  • Last Long Using and Easy Storage: Our premium pet carrier is quite scratch-resistant and sturdy for long lasting use. You can also rest assured that it is strong enough to stand up to the scratches or gnawing of your pets

2. Build comfort near and inside the carrier

When your dog is relaxed near the bag, offer a treat beside it, then just inside the opening. Move the reward farther in only as your dog remains comfortable. Don’t lure a hesitant dog into a position they’re afraid to enter, and don’t hold them in the carrier. The AKC’s carrier-acclimation guidance recommends gradual exposure and cautions against forcing the dog or closing the carrier too soon.

3. Practice brief contact and fastening

If your dog accepts a backpack worn on your body, let them sniff the empty pack first. Drape it loosely without fastening, reward, then take it off. Repeat until your dog is relaxed. Next, fasten it briefly, reward, and remove it. Adjust straps in small steps rather than tightening everything at once. Follow the carrier maker’s directions for fit and secure fastening.

  • Soft reinforced neck collar, with reflective detail, attaches to your dog’s neck collar. It is made out of elastane to protect your dog’s neck movements.

4. Build up to indoor wear

Once your dog is comfortable with brief fastening, practice indoors with the correctly adjusted, empty carrier. Let your dog move around and reward calm behavior. The AKC suggests using very light material to mimic the pack’s bulk during backpack familiarization. Keep sessions short and end while your dog is still comfortable.

5. Take short, empty walks first

Begin with brief, upbeat walks while the backpack is empty. Use praise, treats, play, and opportunities to sniff. Extend walks only as your dog remains at ease. If you later add a light load, restart with short practice and increase gradually rather than assuming your dog is ready for a longer walk with added weight.

Know when to pause or step back

If your dog avoids the bag, stiffens, struggles, or otherwise seems uncomfortable, stop and return to an easier step—such as having the open carrier nearby without asking your dog to enter. Keep the experience voluntary. The AKC guidance emphasizes watching for comfort and avoiding force; it does not provide a clinical diagnostic checklist. If distress continues, ask your veterinarian or a qualified behavior professional for individualized help.

If you’re carrying supplies in a dog backpack

A supply-carrying backpack is different from a carrier that holds your dog. For a healthy, well-conditioned dog carrying supplies, the AKC advises keeping the combined weight of the pack and contents at no more than 10% of the dog’s body weight and balancing the load evenly. This is the AKC’s practical guidance, not a universal veterinary standard or a limit independently validated by the reviewed sources. Ask your veterinarian whether carrying a load is appropriate for your individual dog, especially if health or conditioning is a concern. The AKC’s dog-backpack guidance covers familiarization and carrying supplies.
