A dog backpack carrier fits properly only if your dog’s measurements and weight fall within the limits for that exact model and the carrier supports your dog as its design intends. First distinguish a carrier worn by a person from a backpack worn by the dog: they have different fit checks.
First, identify which kind of dog backpack you have
A person-worn dog backpack carrier holds the dog against the wearer’s body. A dog-worn backpack is a pack secured around the dog. Do not apply strap-fit advice for a dog-worn pack to an enclosed carrier; use the carrier maker’s sizing and fit instructions instead. The American Kennel Club’s carrier guidance and its separate backpack-wearing guidance address these distinct products.
How to check a person-worn carrier
- Find the exact model’s size chart and limits. Check the manufacturer’s stated size and weight range before buying or using the carrier. A breed label or weight by itself does not establish that the dog’s body will fit.
- Take the measurements the maker requests. Compare those measurements with the chart for the specific model. For example, K9 Sport Sack says its sizing uses back length and weight and provides a sizing guide and sizing quiz. Follow the instructions for the carrier you own; measurement methods and construction can differ.
- Check how the carrier supports your dog. The carrier should hold the dog in the manner intended by its design. Follow its instructions for positioning and securing your dog; a general measurement rule cannot confirm fit across every carrier style.
The AKC advises choosing the larger carrier if a dog falls between sizes, while also directing owners to the manufacturer’s size and weight specifications. Treat that as guidance for a between-size choice, not as a substitute for the particular carrier’s instructions.
How to check a backpack worn by the dog
For a dog-worn pack, the AKC recommends straps that are secure without chafing or discomfort, with room for one or two fingers beneath each strap. The pack should sit evenly on both sides. These checks concern the straps and balance of a pack worn by the dog; they do not assess the fit of a person-worn carrier.

What to compare when choosing between carriers
- Measured dimensions: Do your dog’s measurements match the range and method listed for that model?
- Weight limit: Is your dog within the maker’s stated limit?
- Carrier type and support: Does the design support your dog in the way you need, and are you using the fit instructions for that type?
- Clarity of the sizing guidance: Does the manufacturer explain which measurements to take and how to compare them with its chart?
For soft-sided carriers, the AKC’s article How to Choose the Best Dog Carrier says to add two to three inches to shoulder height. That advice is specific to its soft-sided-carrier guidance; do not automatically apply it to every wearable backpack or carrier design.
