Then check the carrier’s usable space, support, ventilation and restraint, make sure it suits the activity, and consider whether you can comfortably carry your dog. Ask your veterinarian if your dog’s age, health, weight or conditioning could affect suitability.
Measure your dog and compare the size chart
Before shopping, note your dog’s height, length and weight. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recommends checking those measurements against the carrier manufacturer’s specifications; a weight label alone cannot show whether a particular body shape or length will fit. A wearable carrier should hold the dog snugly and support it against your body, without crowding.
Check the maker’s guidance for both measurements and weight, then look at the usable interior space and the position your dog will occupy. A carrier’s exterior dimensions or maximum weight rating do not by themselves establish that your dog will fit comfortably.
Match the carrier to the activity
Decide whether you need a carrier for short outings, mobility assistance, general travel or air travel. A wearable backpack carrier is a different style from a floor-based crate or travel carrier, and a design that works for one purpose may not suit another.

If you plan to fly, check the specific airline’s requirements before buying or traveling. Do not assume that a carrier accepted by one airline—or suitable for ordinary outings—will meet another airline’s rules.

- Appropriate weight rating: The dog must fall within the manufacturer’s stated limit.
- Adequate room and support: The interior should fit your dog’s body and support its intended posture without crowding.
- Ventilation: Look for airflow appropriate to the way the carrier is used. Hill’s Pet identifies ventilation as important for keeping a zipped-in dog’s bag breathable.
- Sturdy structure and secure openings: Check how the carrier holds its shape and whether its openings can be secured.
- Restraint: If your dog’s head is exposed, look for a way to prevent it from climbing out.
Hill’s Pet also advises choosing a weight rating suited to your dog’s size. Follow the selected carrier’s instructions for use and fit rather than assuming that one feature or rating makes a carrier appropriate in every situation.
Consider your dog’s health and readiness
A dog’s ability to wear a loaded backpack is not the same as a carrier’s ability to transport a dog. The AKC’s general recommendation that a healthy, well-conditioned dog’s backpack and contents should generally weigh no more than 10% of its body weight concerns a dog wearing a pack; it is not a maximum carrier capacity or a rule for choosing a dog carrier backpack.

The AKC advises consulting a veterinarian before starting pack use for puppies, some senior dogs, dogs with certain medical conditions, overweight dogs or dogs that are poorly conditioned. Hill’s Pet likewise recommends asking a veterinarian if you have concerns about whether a dog purse or backpack is suitable for your dog.
Make sure you can carry the load
Your dog’s fit in a carrier does not establish that you can carry the combined load comfortably. Consider your own ability to manage the dog and carrier, as Ruffwear advises, and follow the product’s published specifications. A stated maximum is not a guarantee that every wearer will find that weight manageable.

Use product-specific sizing advice carefully
Ruffwear’s Hitch Hiker is one example of how sizing can vary by model. The manufacturer lists XXS, XS and S sizes based on the dog’s girth, says the carrier accommodates dogs up to 40 lb / 18 kg, and recommends using back length to help decide whether to size up or down. Its design guidance recommends sizing up for dogs between sizes or with longer backs and considering the wearer’s ability to carry the dog. These details apply to the Hitch Hiker, not to all backpack carriers.
Ruffwear also describes a soft blanket as a possible booster in some fit situations. Treat this as conditional, model-specific advice: check the selected carrier’s guidance and compatibility before using an accessory.
