Yes. Dogs can get sick from drinking contaminated puddle water, but one sip does not mean your dog will become ill. Possible hazards include leptospirosis bacteria, Giardia, and toxins from harmful algal blooms. If the water may have contained an algal bloom, contact a veterinarian promptly; do the same if your dog develops concerning symptoms or you suspect leptospirosis.
What could make a dog sick from puddle water?
A puddle can be contaminated even when you cannot see anything unusual. Its appearance cannot tell you whether it contains germs, and available guidance does not establish the odds that any particular puddle is contaminated.
Leptospirosis
Leptospira bacteria spread through the urine of infected animals and can contaminate water or soil, where they may survive for weeks to months. Harmful algal bloom toxins
Some cyanobacteria, often called blue-green algae, produce toxins that can make animals very ill or kill them. Blooms are more likely in warm, slow-moving, nutrient-rich water and may look like discoloration, foam, scum, mats, or paint-like material. What symptoms should I watch for?
Symptoms depend on the hazard. Signs alone cannot identify the cause, and the sources do not establish a universal safe monitoring period after an ordinary puddle sip.

What should I do if my dog drank dirty water?
If the water may have had an algal bloom
- Keep your dog out of the water.
- Rinse the coat with clean water so your dog does not lick bloom material from its fur.
- Contact a veterinarian promptly if you suspect exposure. If your dog is showing signs such as vomiting, foaming, weakness, or stumbling, treat the situation as urgent.

If leptospirosis is a concern
Contact your veterinarian immediately. Testing and early treatment may be needed; CDC says early antibiotics may reduce the risk of severe organ damage. If your dog seems ill after drinking from a puddle, tell the clinic when and where it happened, how much your dog may have swallowed, what the water looked or smelled like, what signs you have noticed, and your dog’s vaccination history.

If your dog seems well after a sip
A sip alone does not show that your dog is infected or that illness will follow. If you are worried about the water’s appearance or a possible bloom, call your veterinarian for advice. Seek veterinary guidance if symptoms develop; do not rely on a symptom-free interval as proof that every hazard has been ruled out.

How can I prevent puddle-water exposure?
- Bring fresh, safe drinking water and offer it during walks and outings.
- Prevent your dog from drinking from standing water that may be contaminated.
- Keep your dog away from water that looks or smells bad, has bloom-like discoloration, foam, scum, mats, or paint-like material, or is covered by a local warning.
- Ask your veterinarian whether leptospirosis vaccination is appropriate for your dog’s location and exposure risks. A vaccine is available in the United States; availability and schedules may differ elsewhere.
