Introduce an adopted dog to resident pets gradually, with physical separation and active supervision until their behavior shows they can cope calmly. Give the newcomer a quiet place and time to settle first; then tailor short, controlled introductions to the other animal. There is no universal number of days, and a calm meeting does not prove pets are safe together when left alone.

Before introductions, give the adopted dog space to settle

Set up a quiet, secure area where the dog can rest undisturbed and establish a predictable routine before expecting it to meet resident animals. Let the newcomer adjust to the home’s sounds, smells, and daily activity. Prepare ways to keep animals apart, such as a secure room or gate, so nobody has to rely on a rushed face-to-face meeting.

Move forward according to the animals’ behavior, not a fixed timetable. If either animal seems fearful, anxious, or distressed, add distance and give them more time. Never force them to approach or remain near each other.

Introducing an adopted dog to a resident dog

Arrange a controlled first meeting

Consider both dogs’ health, activity levels, personalities, and past experience with other dogs. A shy resident may be overwhelmed by an exuberant newcomer, just as a shy newcomer may struggle with an outgoing resident. A relatively neutral place, such as outdoors or in a yard, can be a better setting for an initial meeting than a space one dog treats as its own.

Keep the first interaction calm and brief if either dog needs a break. Watch for signs of fear, anxiety, distress, or aggressive body language. Reward calm, appropriate behavior, and give the dogs room to disengage rather than insisting they interact.

Prevent competition over food and valued space

Food, resting places, possessions, territory, and human attention can all become sources of conflict. Feed the dogs in separate rooms, avoid putting valued items between them, and initially separate them at bedtime. Give each dog individual attention and opportunities to rest.

If play becomes too intense or aggression appears, interrupt without putting yourself between dogs that may bite, then separate them safely. Do not punish growling or other warning signals: they communicate discomfort, and suppressing them can make it harder to recognize when a dog needs space. VCA’s veterinary behavior guidance explains that “It would be counter-productive for members of a group to fight with each other and risk injury.” That observation is a reason to manage introductions carefully, not a guarantee that household dogs will get along.

Introducing an adopted dog to a resident cat

Start with scent and a physical barrier

Let the dog settle into the home before attempting a meeting. Allow it to become familiar with the cat’s scent, and give the cat a dog-free room. VCA recommends beginning with a physical barrier, with the dog on leash, and allowing the animals to notice one another through it only if they choose to do so. A gate or secure room divider can help maintain that separation.

Watch both animals rather than trying to make them interact. If either shows distress, increase distance or end the session. Do not let the dog rush the barrier or the cat’s retreat.

Progress to leashed, supervised sessions

If the animals remain neutral at the barrier, try a short session in an open room with the dog leashed. Reward calm behavior and allow the cat to leave or move to a safe elevated place. International Cat Care’s 2024 kitten booklet also recommends scent exposure and a loose lead for early meetings; that advice is specifically about kittens meeting resident dogs, so it should not be treated as a complete protocol for every adult cat or household.

Pawafful Extra Tall Cat Gate for Doorways, 47.2-86.6" High, Pet Gate
  • EXTRA TALL CAT GATE FOR JUMPERS: Adjustable from 47.2 to 86.6 inches high, this indoor pet gate creates a taller doorway barrier for agile cats, active jumpers and multi-pet households. Ideal for helping manage room-to-room access during introductions, feeding or everyday separation.
  • PRESSURE MOUNTED FOR DOORWAYS: Designed for openings from 27.5 to 37.8 inches wide. The pressure-mounted setup installs without drilling for standard doorway use. Measure the top, middle and bottom of your opening before ordering and use the narrowest measurement to confirm fit.
  • 1.38-INCH NARROW BAR SPACING: Closely spaced vertical bars help reduce opportunities for adult cats to squeeze through while still allowing pets to see and smell one another. Especially useful for cat introductions, foster setups and controlled indoor pet zones. Supervise very small kittens.
  • WALK-THROUGH DOOR FOR DAILY ACCESS: The integrated door allows adults to move between rooms without taking down the entire gate. A double-lock design helps keep the door closed during everyday use while maintaining convenient access for people.
  • ADJUSTABLE FOR YOUR SPACE: Multiple height sections allow the gate to adapt to different doorway heights, making it useful for bedrooms, kitchens, hallways and other indoor spaces. Tighten pressure points evenly during setup and periodically recheck the gate after regular use.

Make sure the cat can reach food, litter, and resting places without having to pass the dog, and provide elevated resting options. Keep the pets physically separated whenever no responsible adult is actively supervising them. Some dogs with strong prey instincts, or a history of chasing and catching small animals, may never be safe around cats. A successful short session is not evidence that those animals can safely be left together.

For birds, rabbits, and other resident animals

The guidance here does not establish a species-specific introduction protocol for birds, rabbits, reptiles, or other small animals. Do not assume that steps designed for dogs and cats are suitable. Maintain secure separation and consult a veterinarian or behavior professional familiar with the species before attempting contact.

When to pause and get professional help

Stop progressing if there is repeated aggression, persistent distress, strong chasing or prey behavior, or any concern that an animal could be injured. Keep the pets separated and ask your veterinarian about referral to a veterinary behaviorist or another qualified behavior professional. Seek advice before trying further contact if a dog has a history of catching small animals.

ASPCA guidance on aggression between household cats also supports separation, careful reintroduction, and professional help when aggression persists: ASPCA: Aggression Between Cats in Your Household. While that page concerns cats, it reinforces that serious or ongoing household aggression warrants a cautious plan rather than forced contact.
