Rover ranks the Goldendoodle first in Texas for 2026 based on state volume of user-submitted dogs—not a statewide census or AKC ranking.

The Goldendoodle ranked first in Texas in Rover’s 2026 dog-breed table. Rover bases that ranking on the total volume of user-submitted dogs in each state, and excludes non-designer mixed breeds. It reflects Rover’s data—not a census of every dog in Texas or a government or American Kennel Club (AKC) ranking.

What Rover’s Texas ranking measures

Rover’s 2026 breed rankings sort dogs by total state volume in Rover’s user-submitted data. On that measure, the Goldendoodle is Texas’s top-ranked breed. The result should be read within those boundaries: it describes the dogs represented in Rover’s data, and Rover’s ranked breed lists exclude non-designer mixed breeds.

A ranking based on volume is also different from a ranking based on growth. Rover separately identifies breeds that are rising fastest year over year. For its 2026 national trending list, Rover requires at least 1,000 new pets per breed; its state trending list has a minimum of 10. The Pomsky leads the national fastest-rising list with 13% year-over-year growth, but that growth figure does not make it the most popular breed in Texas.

Why Texas’s result differs from national rankings

Rover’s national table ranks non-designer mixed breeds first, Labrador Retriever second, Golden Retriever third, and Goldendoodle fourth. Its Texas table instead puts the Goldendoodle first. Those results can differ because one is a state-level ranking and the other is national; they describe separate pools of user-submitted dogs.

The AKC’s ranking is another distinct measure. In its 2026 announcement of 2025 U.S. registration statistics, the AKC placed the French Bulldog at number one for the fourth consecutive year. That is a nationwide ranking based on AKC registrations, not a Texas ranking based on Rover user submissions, so it does not conflict with Rover’s result.

Is the Blue Lacy Texas’s most popular breed?

Not according to the Rover ranking. The Blue Lacy is described as Texas’s official state dog breed, a designation separate from a measured popularity ranking. A state symbol and a data-based ranking answer different questions; the Blue Lacy’s official status does not change Rover’s finding that the Goldendoodle leads its Texas table.

What the ranking can—and cannot—tell you

Rover’s result is useful for answering which breed leads in its Texas data under its stated method. It does not show that every Texan prefers Goldendoodles, establish how many Goldendoodles live in the state, or say which breed is the best fit for a particular household. As AKC President and CEO Gina M. DiNardo put it, “Popularity does not mean it’s right for everyone.” Consider a dog’s needs and your lifestyle rather than choosing a breed on rank alone.
