Yes, cats can pass gas. An occasional episode may happen, but a new, frequent, or increasing pattern deserves attention, especially if your cat seems bloated or uncomfortable. Gas alone cannot identify the cause, so watch for other symptoms and contact your veterinarian when the pattern changes or your cat seems unwell.

What can cause gas in cats?

Possible contributors include a sudden food change, food sensitivity, eating or drinking quickly, parasites, infection, inflammation, changes in intestinal microbes, or poor nutrient absorption. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis based on flatulence alone.

Texas A&M veterinary specialist Yuri Lawrence says, “Swallowed air from eating or drinking water too fast often makes the largest contribution to gas in the gastrointestinal tract.” This observation concerns pets generally, not cats specifically. Food composition and eating habits may also play a role.

Note whether the gas began after a food or feeding change, whether it is isolated or accompanied by other symptoms, and whether it is short-lived or persistent. There is no established number of farts that defines an abnormal frequency.

When should you call the veterinarian?

Contact your veterinarian about new, frequent, or increasing gas, particularly if your cat appears bloated or uncomfortable. Seek prompt veterinary advice if it occurs with vomiting, diarrhea, reduced appetite, lower activity, weight loss, or abdominal pain.

Vomiting also warrants attention in its own right. Cornell Feline Health Center advises evaluation when a cat vomits more than once a week or vomits along with signs such as lethargy, weakness, reduced appetite, blood, changes in thirst or urination, or diarrhea.

Straining in the litter box may be difficult to distinguish from urinary trouble. If you suspect your cat cannot urinate, seek immediate veterinary care; urinary obstruction is an emergency.

What to expect at a veterinary visit

Your veterinarian may ask about your cat’s food and treats, recent diet changes, how often the gas occurs, stool consistency, appetite, activity, and other signs, then perform a physical examination. Depending on the findings, they may recommend tests such as a fecal examination or imaging. Treatment depends on the underlying cause.

What can you do while you seek advice?

  1. Keep notes. Record food, treats, recent changes, when the gas occurs, stool changes, and any other symptoms.
  2. Discuss routine changes with your veterinarian. Ask before changing your cat’s diet or feeding routine, especially if symptoms persist.
  3. Do not self-treat with medication. Simethicone is used off-label in veterinary medicine. Give it only if your veterinarian recommends it and exactly as directed.
  4. Ask before using a probiotic for cats. A veterinarian may recommend a probiotic or prebiotic for selected intestinal conditions, but it is not a guaranteed remedy for ordinary gas.
