A wall strap can reduce tip risk, but it does not fix a damaged or incorrectly assembled tree—and no single safe height threshold applies to every brand.
Start with assembly, condition, and placement
Follow the manual for the exact cat tree or furniture system. Install every post, platform, and fastener as shown, then check that the connections are seated and secure. A Chewy-hosted cat-tree manual says, “the included wall anchor strap can be installed to help prevent the tree from tipping over and causing injury to people or pets.” The search result does not identify the maker or model, so treat that as guidance for the manual’s product, not a feature of every cat tree. Set freestanding furniture on a level, stable surface. Mau says its stability limits assume proper assembly on such a surface; leaping, multi-cat play, an uneven floor, or accidental contact can still create forces that tip a tree. See Mau’s stability guidance.
If the base, boards, posts, or threads are damaged or loose, do not try to compensate by adding arbitrary hardware. A restraint is an added connection, not a repair or proof that the furniture is structurally sound. Contact the product maker or follow its replacement guidance.

When and how to anchor a freestanding cat tree
Use the restraint supplied with the product or one the maker recommends for that model. Follow the instructions for both the furniture and the restraint, including the requirements for your wall and the attachment point. There is no universally correct screw, wall anchor, or stud arrangement for every product and wall.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) gives general furniture tip-over advice—not cat-tree-specific instructions—to follow the manufacturer’s directions and secure furniture with an appropriate anti-tip device. Its publication describes attaching one end of an anchoring device to the furniture and the other to a wall or sturdy base as directed, then adjusting the device and checking that it is firmly attached. Use the instructions for your particular restraint and furniture rather than treating those general steps as a one-size-fits-all installation. CPSC Anchor It! guidance and CPSC’s anchoring steps.

Is there a height at which a cat tree must be anchored?
There is no universal height threshold established here. Mau recommends securing its own products taller than 20 inches to a wall with a suitable third-party anti-tip device. That is Mau’s product-specific recommendation, not an industry-wide standard; check the guidance for your exact model. Mau’s recommendation.
Check the restraint before using it
CPSC has warned about identified defective plastic restraint kits, including reports of breakage, and advises consumers to stop using affected products. That warning does not apply to all restraint hardware. Before buying or continuing to use a kit, check current CPSC recalls and warnings for the specific product. Freestanding trees and wall-mounted shelves are different systems
A wall-mounted cat shelf is not installed like a freestanding tree. Follow the instructions for the exact shelf system and configuration. CatScapes says its wall shelves gain substantial stability when brackets are installed on studs and shelves are interconnected at angles. Whether you keep a freestanding tree, anchor it, or choose a wall-mounted system, base the decision on the particular product and installation—not a generic height cutoff or a universal ranking of furniture types.

- Keep it freestanding: Confirm the product is assembled as directed, in sound condition, and on a level, stable floor. Use any restraint the maker supplies or recommends.
- Anchor it: Check that the furniture maker supports the restraint approach and that the wall and attachment point meet the installation instructions. Choose hardware compatible with both the furniture and wall.
- Use wall-mounted shelves: Follow that system’s directions for brackets, attachment points, and shelf configuration. Do not apply freestanding-tree instructions in place of them.
A compatible mat or rug may reduce sliding if the product maker permits it, but it is not a substitute for correct assembly or an appropriate restraint. The sources cited here do not establish that a mat prevents a top-heavy tree from tipping.
