Let your cat approach new furniture on their own, and make the item fit their habits. For a scratching post or pad, choose a stable surface in a texture and orientation your cat already likes, then place it beside the spot they scratch now. Invite interest with play or a treat, protect the furniture temporarily if needed, and never force your cat’s paws onto the new item.
Start by identifying what your cat needs from the furniture
If you are introducing a sofa, chair, or other household item, give your cat calm access to inspect it. If you are trying to redirect scratching, remember that scratching is normal: cats may scratch to stretch, maintain their claws, play, and leave visual or scent signals. The aim is to offer an acceptable target, not to stop the behavior altogether.
Watch where and how your cat scratches before choosing an alternative. Note whether they reach upward, scratch a horizontal surface, or prefer an angle, and notice the material they select. A new post or pad that resembles those preferences is a more sensible starting point than one chosen only for its appearance.
Choose a scratcher that suits your cat

There is no single material or shape that suits every cat. The useful test is whether the item is stable, accessible, and compatible with what your cat already chooses.

Introduce the item without pressure
- Make it available in a calm setting. Set the furniture or scratcher where your cat can investigate it without being startled or cornered. For a large change to the home, such as preparing a nursery, the ASPCA’s advice on cats and babies is to set furniture up in advance and allow several weeks for investigation before making selected surfaces off limits. That timeline is specific to this kind of household change, not a universal requirement for every new item.
- Put a scratcher beside the current target. Place it directly next to the couch, chair, or other area the cat scratches. If they use multiple locations, provide an alternative near each one they regularly target.
- Invite exploration. Try moving a wand toy near the item, or use catnip if your cat responds to it. These are optional ways to spark interest, not guarantees that the cat will use the scratcher.
- Reward voluntary interest. When your cat investigates or uses the item, offer something they enjoy, such as a treat, play, praise, or petting. The ASPCA position statement on training methods describes humane training as making primary use of lures and rewards such as food, praise, petting, and play.
- Keep the alternative nearby while protecting furniture. A fitted cover or suitable temporary deterrent, such as double-sided tape where appropriate, can help protect a vulnerable spot while the scratcher remains available beside it. Check product directions and whether a cover or deterrent is compatible with the furniture fabric.
Once your cat uses the scratcher reliably, you may be able to move it gradually if you want it elsewhere. The available guidance does not establish a tested rate for moving it, so follow your cat’s response rather than relying on a fixed schedule.
What not to do when redirecting scratching
Do not punish ordinary scratching or physically make your cat use the new item. The ASPCA’s guidance on destructive scratching warns against holding a cat at a scratching post and dragging their claws on it, because the experience can frighten the cat and teach them to avoid the post. Let the cat discover the surface voluntarily.

When avoidance may point to comfort or health
If your cat repeatedly avoids a vertical post, offer a horizontal scratcher rather than assuming they are being difficult. A tall post may be uncomfortable for some cats. A sudden change in scratching or other behavior, apparent pain, or substantial distress warrants advice from a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional instead of treating it as a simple training issue.
