Keep your dog in a familiar, dry place outside the bathroom or shower area, and secure medicines and cleaning products before you turn on the water. If a closed door upsets your dog, practice brief separations and build up gradually instead of expecting the dog to cope with an entire shower.
Set up a safe place before you shower
Choose a waiting spot your dog already finds comfortable, such as a familiar room or secure pen. A crate is an option only if your dog is accustomed to it and treats it as a safe resting place. There is no universally best arrangement: choose one that fits your dog and prevents access to the wet shower area.
- Keep the bathroom door or shower enclosure positioned so your dog cannot wander onto a wet, slippery floor.
- Make sure your dog has a comfortable place to wait and cannot reach hazards in the bathroom.
- Do not rely on a bath mat as protection for a dog roaming into your shower. Non-slip mats are recommended for dogs being bathed, not as a substitute for keeping a waiting dog out of the wet area.
Put bathroom hazards out of reach
Store medications and cleaning products securely. Keep your dog out of the bathroom while spraying cleaners, and close the toilet lid when chemical bowl or tank treatments are in use. For poison-prevention guidance, see the Pet Poison Helpline’s pet-safety advice.
Help your dog cope with a closed door
If your dog becomes unsettled when you disappear behind the bathroom door, do not assume the dog will simply settle if confined for the length of your shower. ASPCA guidance for separation anxiety recommends starting with very brief practice stays—shorter than the time it takes the dog to become upset—and increasing duration gradually as the dog remains comfortable. A sit/down stay or brief out-of-sight practice can help you work on this in small steps.

A food-stuffed toy may serve as a positive cue during practice for some dogs, but it is not suitable for every dog when unsupervised and does not treat anxiety on its own. Follow the ASPCA’s separation-anxiety guidance. For ongoing anxiety, Cornell recommends gradual desensitization and positive-reinforcement support; consult your veterinarian or a qualified behavior professional if distress persists or is severe. Avoid harsh punishment, which can make fear and anxiety worse. See Cornell’s guidance on anxiety in dogs.
If you are showering your dog
Bathing a dog is different from keeping a dog safe while you shower. For a dog in the tub or shower, use a non-slip surface, warm—not extreme—water, and a gentle flow. PetMD’s veterinarian-reviewed dog-bathing guide recommends non-slip footing and water that is neither too hot nor too cold; avoid high-pressure water if it stresses your dog. The mat advice applies to the dog being bathed, not to a dog waiting unsupervised while you shower.

Brush your dog before wetting the coat. Virginia Tech’s safe-bathing guidance advises consulting a veterinarian if your pet has inflamed skin, open sores, or pain when touched. Use shampoo made for pets, following the product directions.
