Help your puppy get comfortable before the bath
A puppy’s first experience should not be an unexpected full bath. Let your puppy explore the dry tub or shower at their own pace, and reward calm approaches or standing. If the puppy is nervous, repeat this without water before gradually introducing a little water. VCA Animal Hospitals describes bathing as something that should be a relaxing experience: Preparing Your Puppy for a Lifetime of Good Hygiene.
Prepare the bathing area before bringing your puppy in. Keep a towel, treats, a damp washcloth and shampoo within reach so you do not have to leave a wet puppy unattended. Put a nonslip mat—or another stable, nonslip surface—in the tub or shower. VCA notes that a mat can help a dog feel more secure on a slick surface (Puppy Bath & Nail Trim Tips).
A treat placed on a securely suctioned surface can offer a distraction, but it is optional. Supervise your puppy throughout and do not rely on a treat to make them tolerate a bath they find frightening.

Wash gently and keep water away from the face
- Check the water first. Use comfortable warm, not hot, water; test it with your hand or elbow. Puppies can be sensitive to temperature extremes.
- Wet the body gradually. Begin at the torso and move toward the feet. Use a gentle pour or controlled flow rather than splashing or spraying suddenly.
- Clean the face with a damp cloth. Do not direct water at the eyes or nose, and keep water out of the ears.
- Use shampoo made for dogs. Choose a puppy-formulated or otherwise pet-formulated shampoo, lather gently, and rinse until the suds are gone. The ASPCA also advises using a product formulated for dogs: Dog Grooming Tips.
If your veterinarian has prescribed medicated shampoo, follow the directions for that product. Ask your veterinarian before bathing a puppy with irritated skin or another health concern rather than treating it with a general-purpose shampoo.
Dry your puppy without adding more stress
Towel dry with slow, firm movements. If a dryer is needed, let your puppy investigate it while it is off, then introduce the sound and airflow from a distance on a low or cool setting. Angle it away from the face and continue only while your puppy appears comfortable. If the dryer causes distress, stop and use a towel instead.

How often should you bathe a puppy?
There is no single bathing interval that suits every puppy. The Royal Veterinary College’s puppy healthcare advice says, “Puppies do not need regular bathing.” Its guidance recommends a gentle pet shampoo if a bath is needed: Puppy healthcare advice.
VCA says bathing needs as a puppy gets older depend on factors including age, lifestyle, coat and health. Its general guidance says healthy dogs generally should not be bathed more than once a month to preserve natural oils, while noting that a bath after swimming may remove irritating chlorine or salt water. Treat this as general guidance, not a universal schedule; ask your veterinarian what is appropriate for your puppy.

When to ask a veterinarian
Seek veterinary advice if your puppy has ongoing skin irritation, sores, bald patches or persistent scratching. Redness, odor, discharge, head shaking or pain around an ear also warrants veterinary advice. A puppy with a skin condition, suspected ear infection, pain, or a prescribed bathing regimen needs individualized advice.
