How often does a puppy need a bath?
There is no single interval that suits every puppy. The Royal Veterinary College says puppies do not need regular bathing, while the American Kennel Club describes monthly bathing as a routine. These are general approaches, not medical requirements. Choose based on your puppy’s coat, activity, how dirty it gets, age, tolerance for bathing, and any veterinary instructions. The Royal Veterinary College’s dog-care guidance and AKC’s bathing guidance reflect those different approaches.
| Approach | What it means | Best used as |
|---|---|---|
| Needs-based bathing | The RVC says puppies do not need regular baths. RVC | A practical starting point for a puppy that stays clean: bathe when needed rather than by the calendar. |
| Monthly routine | AKC describes monthly bathing as a routine. AKC | A general grooming routine, adjusted for the puppy’s coat, lifestyle, and skin. |
Groomer Beth Cristiano, quoted by AKC, says bathing frequency varies by breed, lifestyle, coat length, and how much grooming work an owner is willing to do. That is grooming guidance, not a clinical rule. AKC
What should determine your puppy’s schedule?
- Coat: Coat type and length affect how readily dirt collects and how much grooming is needed.
- Activity and mess: A puppy that plays outside, rolls in dirt, or gets something on its coat may need cleaning sooner than one that stays clean.
- Age and comfort: A very young or uneasy puppy needs gentle handling and a calm, warm bathing setup.
- Skin and health: Itching, redness, recurring odor, or a prescribed skin treatment calls for veterinary advice rather than simply adding more baths. VCA’s bathing guidance
If only one area is dirty, clean that area instead of automatically giving the puppy a full shampoo bath.

Can you bathe an 8-week-old puppy?
AKC’s puppy guidance says to begin shampoo and conditioner once a puppy is at least three months old. The RVC says to use gentle pet shampoo if a puppy needs a bath but does not specify a minimum age. Because the advice differs and an 8-week-old puppy is very young, ask your veterinarian before giving a full shampoo bath. If cleaning cannot wait, keep the puppy warm, handle it gently, and use only a gentle product intended for dogs if shampoo is needed. AKC’s puppy-bathing guidance · RVC
How to bathe a puppy gently
- Prepare first. Have the dog-specific shampoo, towels, and a warm, safe bathing area ready so the puppy is not left waiting wet.
- Introduce the experience gradually. Let the puppy get comfortable with the bathing area and water before attempting a full bath. Keep the handling calm and gentle.
- Use a gentle wash. Follow the product directions and use a soft flow of water and gentle hand motions rather than spraying forcefully or scrubbing hard. AKC
- Rinse thoroughly. Rinse out all shampoo, since residue can irritate skin.
- Dry and reassure. Towel-dry gently and keep the puppy warm until it is dry.
What shampoo should you use?
Choose a gentle shampoo formulated for dogs. VCA recommends a hypoallergenic shampoo without added perfumes for routine bathing; AKC advises checking with your veterinarian about products suited to your puppy. Do not use a human shampoo in place of a dog-specific product, and do not assume a medicated shampoo is appropriate unless your veterinary team recommends it. VCA · AKC

Is it bad to bathe a puppy too often?
Bathing more often than your puppy needs is not a good substitute for finding the cause of an ongoing skin or odor problem. If frequent bathing seems necessary, or you notice itching, redness, or recurring odor, contact your veterinarian. Some skin conditions require frequent medicated or therapeutic baths, but the veterinary team should set the product and schedule; a general grooming interval cannot determine treatment. VCA
