Gently press excess water from your puppy’s coat, blot with a clean towel, and keep your puppy in a warm place until fully dry. A dryer is optional: if your puppy tolerates one, use cool or low airflow, keep it moving, and stop if your puppy becomes frightened or distressed.
How to dry your puppy step by step
- Let water drip off, then press gently. After the final rinse, allow excess water to drain. Use your hands to gently squeeze or press water from the coat; avoid rough rubbing.
- Blot with a clean towel. Press the towel against the coat and lift it to absorb water. Work from the head toward the tail. A second dry towel can help with a longer or thicker coat. Virginia Tech Veterinary Teaching Hospital recommends pressing towels against the coat rather than rubbing (Virginia Tech Veterinary Teaching Hospital); Hong Kong’s Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department also advises squeezing out excess water before towel drying (AFCD).
- Check moisture-prone areas. Carefully dry skin folds, the armpits, groin, and the spaces between the toes. Be gentle around sensitive areas.
- Keep your puppy warm until dry. Settle your puppy in a warm place and keep checking the coat and those hard-to-dry areas. There is no single reliable drying time for every puppy; coat, size, room conditions, and tolerance vary.
Should you use a dryer?
A dryer is optional. Towels may be enough, especially if noise or airflow upsets your puppy. A dryer can help with a longer or thicker coat, but comfort and safe handling matter more than finishing quickly. There is no universal breed-by-breed rule for choosing between towel-only drying and using a dryer.
If your puppy tolerates a dryer
- Use cool or low airflow as the cautious default, especially for a small puppy.
- Start at a distance and keep the airflow moving across the coat. Do not hold it in one spot: concentrated heat can burn skin, Virginia Tech warns.
- Watch your puppy throughout and stop if it shows fear or distress. Switch back to towels rather than forcing the dryer.
AFCD says dryer air should be warm, not hot; Virginia Tech recommends cool or low. Choosing cool or low is the more cautious approach for a puppy.
If the dryer frightens your puppy
Use towels and let your puppy dry in a warm place. If you want to try a dryer another time, introduce its sound and handling gradually, pairing calm moments with praise and treats. Do not force exposure during the bath.

When to contact a veterinarian
If your puppy’s skin is inflamed, has open sores, or your puppy is uncomfortable when touched, Virginia Tech advises skipping the bath and contacting a veterinarian. After bathing, seek veterinary advice if you notice redness, bumps, excessive scratching, or an unusual odor. For a very young, ill, or distressed puppy, ask your veterinarian for guidance rather than treating routine bath advice as a special-care protocol.
