Report suspected reptile smuggling to the wildlife or law-enforcement authority responsible for the place where the activity is happening. If it is underway and anyone may be in immediate danger, move to safety and contact local emergency services. Do not confront anyone or risk your safety to gather evidence.
What to do first if you suspect reptile smuggling
- Get to safety. Keep your distance from suspected criminal activity. If a person is in immediate danger, contact local emergency services; a wildlife tip line is not an emergency response service.
- Write down what you observed. Note the date and time, exact or best-known location, what happened, and any details you personally saw about animals, people, vehicles, routes, or shipments. Include a species name only if you are confident; label estimates and uncertainty clearly.
- Preserve relevant digital evidence. For an online sale, save the full listing URL, screenshots, the date and time you viewed it, the seller or account name, and any publicly visible shipping or transaction details. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) specifically requests a full URL and screenshots for suspected online trafficking (FWS wildlife-crime reporting instructions). Do not pose as a buyer or contact a seller to investigate.
- Send a concise report to the authority with jurisdiction. Give the facts in chronological order and attach images or other material if the reporting channel accepts them. Ask for a reference number or a safe way to follow up, if available.
Do not trespass, track people, touch or transport animals or suspected contraband, or attempt to seize evidence. If an animal or item is physically present, ask the relevant authority how to handle it. If an animal is injured or needs rescue, contact the appropriate local animal or wildlife service as well as making an enforcement report.
Where to report suspected reptile smuggling
The right agency depends on where the suspected activity is taking place, not necessarily where you live. For cross-border trade or a potentially CITES-listed specimen, report to the relevant national agencies in the affected country or countries. The CITES Secretariat is not a law-enforcement authority and does not investigate alleged crimes; it directs the public to national agencies where illegal trade is occurring (CITES national authorities directory).

How to make a useful report
Separate observation from suspicion
Describe what you saw rather than stating as fact that a crime occurred. For example: “At about 6 p.m. on 12 May, I saw several small reptiles being loaded into a van at [location]. I could not identify the species.” Explain how you obtained the information and distinguish what you observed from what you inferred.

Include details that can help authorities assess it
- Date, time, and precise location, or the best available estimate.
- What happened and how many animals you saw, with estimates labeled as estimates.
- Species identification only when you are confident; otherwise describe visible features without guessing.
- Details you personally observed about people, vehicles, routes, containers, or shipments.
- For online activity, the full page URL, screenshots, the time and date viewed, and publicly visible seller or shipping information.
Do not edit images in a way that changes what they show. Keep the original files when possible, and do not put yourself at risk to obtain more evidence. FWS advises staying a safe distance away and taking photos or video only when it is safe (FWS wildlife-crime reporting instructions).

FWS says people reporting in the United States may remain anonymous. It also advises discussing a possible reward with the receiving special agent; eligibility is discretionary and tied to specified federal wildlife laws.
