Why Is My Betta Fish Having a Hard Time Swimming?

Abnormal swimming is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Check water quality, temperature, feeding, and tank flow before considering treatment, and know when a fish veterinarian is needed.

Difficulty swimming is a symptom, not a diagnosis. A betta that floats, sinks, lists to one side, circles, or cannot stay upright may be reacting to poor water quality, temperature or current stress, a feeding problem, injury, infection, parasites, a deformity, or internal disease. Start by observing the pattern and testing the water before trying medication; the right treatment depends on the cause.

What does “swimming weird” look like?

Note what the fish is doing and whether the problem is constant or comes and goes. Record whether your betta is floating at the surface, sinking, tilting, circling, struggling to remain upright, or having trouble reaching the surface. Also watch for appetite loss, a swollen belly, unusual breathing, discoloration, lesions, or lethargy.

These details help a veterinarian assess buoyancy and overall health. The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine explains that fish evaluation includes observing the fish’s ability to swim and maintain buoyancy in the water column. No single swimming pattern identifies a specific illness.

Why is my betta floating on its side or sinking?

Floating, sinking, and listing can all involve buoyancy dysfunction, sometimes called a swim-bladder problem. But “swim bladder disease” is a description of a sign, not a diagnosis of its cause. Poor water quality, temperature stress, excessive current, digestive problems, infection, parasites, injury, deformity, or organ disease can produce abnormal swimming.

What you observe What to consider What to check next
Floating, sinking, listing, or difficulty staying upright Buoyancy dysfunction is possible, but it does not explain why the sign is happening. PetMD identifies several possible causes, including water-quality problems and disease. Test the water and temperature; note whether the fish can reach the surface and whether the pattern is worsening.
Abnormal swimming with a swollen belly or recent increase in feeding Overfeeding, constipation, gulped air, or dry food that expands may contribute to digestive distension and pressure on the swim bladder. Review the amount and type of food, when the change began, and whether the abdomen looks enlarged.
Weakness in a newly established tank Water-quality instability is a concern. Merck Veterinary Manual says new-tank syndrome commonly occurs within the first six weeks after setup. Check ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature, and whether filtration is functioning.
Abnormal swimming with lesions, unusual breathing, appetite loss, swelling, or discoloration Infection, parasites, injury, or internal disease may be involved; the swimming sign alone cannot distinguish among them. Arrange assessment by a veterinarian experienced with aquatic animals, especially if signs are severe or progressing.
Difficulty swimming near a strong filter flow Excessive current may make swimming more strenuous, particularly for a weak fish. Observe whether the fish can rest and move without fighting the flow.

What should you check first?

Test the water before medicating

Use an aquarium water test kit to check ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH, and check the water temperature with a thermometer. Poor water quality is one of the most common causes PetMD identifies for buoyancy problems. The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine also notes that water quality is a major factor in fish health.

Look at the results alongside the kit instructions and appropriate betta-care guidance; a single reading is not a diagnosis. Also consider whether the water has recently changed, whether the tank is newly established, and whether the filter is operating. Merck Veterinary Manual recommends water changes and assessing adequate biofiltration when addressing aquarium-fish water-quality problems.

Review feeding and recent changes

Think back to when the swimming change began. Has feeding increased? Is the food dried, and was it soaked before feeding? Has the fish been injured, or was there a recent change in tank conditions? Bettafish.org recommends high-quality food and soaking dried foods for a few minutes in tank water. These details can help distinguish a possible feeding-related problem from environmental stress, but they do not confirm a diagnosis.

Check the tank’s flow and swimming route

Observe whether the fish is being pushed around by the filter current or struggling to reach the surface. A weak swimmer may benefit from a calmer route and an easy-to-reach resting place. Consider tank age and filtration as well as the fish’s behavior; one symptom by itself is not enough to decide that the swim bladder is the cause.

What can you safely do at home?

  1. Correct water-quality problems carefully. Use appropriately conditioned water for partial changes, make measured changes rather than abrupt ones, and maintain biofiltration. Merck’s aquarium-fish guidance emphasizes water changes and checking biofiltration.
  2. Keep temperature stable. Check it with a thermometer and avoid sudden changes while correcting the environment.
  3. Reduce exertion. If strong current is making swimming difficult, reduce the flow. Make the route to the surface easy; temporarily lowering the water depth and providing a broad resting place may help a weak swimmer, provided changes do not cause abrupt temperature or water-chemistry swings.
  4. Review feeding. Avoid overfeeding and consider whether dry food was soaked. Bettafish.org’s 2024 supportive-care guide recommends keeping nitrate below 20 ppm; treat that as the guide’s husbandry target, not a universal diagnostic cutoff.
  5. Watch for improvement or worsening. Keep track of swimming, appetite, breathing, and other visible changes as you correct environmental problems. If the fish remains severely abnormal or declines, contact a veterinarian.

Do not start antibiotics, antiparasitics, or salt treatments simply because your betta is listing or floating. PetMD and Petco’s veterinary Q&A both indicate that treatment depends on the underlying cause; an inappropriate treatment may fail to address the problem.

When should you call a veterinarian?

Contact a veterinarian experienced with aquatic animals if your betta cannot remain upright, cannot reach the surface, stops eating, becomes swollen or discolored, has difficulty breathing, or has severe or persistent abnormal swimming. Seek veterinary advice as well if the fish does not improve after water and husbandry corrections.
