Barramundi are not freshwater-only fish. They can live in freshwater, brackish water and seawater; juveniles often grow in rivers and billabongs, while adults move downstream to saltier coastal or estuarine waters to spawn.
Can barramundi live in freshwater?
Yes. Barramundi (Lates calcarifer) tolerate a broad range of salinities, a trait called euryhalinity. They occur in freshwater rivers, lakes, billabongs and lagoons, as well as brackish estuaries and coastal seawater. The NSW Department of Primary Industries describes them as using environments from freshwater to seawater: NSW Department of Primary Industries. FAO likewise lists freshwater, brackish and marine habitats: FAO.
So finding a barramundi in a river or billabong does not make it a freshwater-only species. Freshwater is an important habitat for much of its growth, but it is only part of the fish’s life cycle.
Do barramundi need saltwater to spawn?
Yes. Barramundi generally reproduce in saltier water near estuaries, river mouths and coastal bays. Their eggs and early larvae need saline conditions, so spawning takes place downstream rather than in freshwater reaches. In technical terms, the Western Australian Fisheries Management Paper 127 gives an approximate salinity range of 22–40 parts per thousand for eggs and early larvae: Western Australia Fisheries Management Paper 127. This describes an early-life requirement, not the salinity needed by barramundi at every age.
How does a barramundi move between freshwater and saltwater?
Barramundi are generally described as catadromous: they spend much of their growth phase in freshwater and migrate downstream to saltier water to reproduce. Young fish use estuarine nursery areas and may move upriver into freshwater habitats. As they mature, fish migrate back toward estuaries and coastal waters to spawn; juveniles then recruit to nursery areas and can move upstream again. The timing varies by account and population: FAO describes maturing males moving downstream at roughly three to four years old, while the Northern Territory Government says most freshwater barramundi migrate back to the ocean after three to five years. These are approximate life-history descriptions, not a fixed schedule for every fish.

Yes. Barramundi aquaculture can use freshwater, brackish water or seawater because the species tolerates a wide salinity range. Queensland Government’s Business Queensland guidance says barramundi can be grown in all three: Business Queensland. The water used in a farm therefore does not, by itself, determine whether barramundi are a freshwater species.

What does “freshwater, brackish and saltwater” mean?
- Freshwater: inland water such as rivers, lakes and billabongs.
- Brackish water: a mixture of fresh and salt water, commonly found in estuaries.
- Euryhaline: able to tolerate a wide range of salinities.
- Catadromous: generally growing in freshwater and migrating to saltier water to reproduce.
