A small tilapia breeding pond can start at about 200 m² (2,153 ft²), provided it can be drained and seined easily. Official hatchery guidance gives an open-pond range of 200–1,200 m², while FAO says spawning ponds are generally 2,000 m² or smaller. For broodstock, plan density by fish size and aim for about one male to three females—not by using grow-out stocking rates.
How large should a tilapia breeding pond be?
For a small starter hatchery, about 200 m² is a practical starting point. The SEAFDEC minimum nursery benchmark and the lower end of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) open-pond range support that scale. BFAR’s hatchery-management method describes open breeding ponds of 200–1,200 m²; FAO says spawning ponds are generally 2,000 m² or smaller.
These are planning references, not a universal minimum or maximum. A larger pond is possible, but as area grows it becomes harder to drain completely, seine fry, exclude predators, and keep broodstock groups separate. Choose the smallest pond that can meet your fry target while still giving workers enough access to harvest and clean it.

Area alone does not determine whether a pond is suitable. Before settling on a size, match it to your drainage and seine access, target breeder biomass, water exchange and aeration, feed and labor capacity, and desired fry output.

What depth should a breeding pond have?
BFAR’s intensive hatchery module says to fill a prepared breeding pond to 1.0–1.2 m. Its hatchery-management method also describes open breeding ponds at 0.4–0.6 m. These are different depth references in the BFAR material; the guidance does not establish that one range universally replaces the other. Use the depth specified for the hatchery system you are following rather than blending the figures into a single standard.
India’s responsible-farming guideline gives about 1.5 m as an ideal depth for general tilapia culture ponds. That is broader culture guidance, not a specific broodstock-pond instruction.

For a prepared breeding pond, BFAR also calls for a soft, level bottom: males need to make nests, while workers need to seine and drain the pond. Design the inlet and outlet so you can control water levels and empty the pond fully. The BFAR manual emphasizes complete draining, bottom preparation, predator removal, and fine-mesh nets for fry collection.
How many breeder tilapia fit in a 200 m² pond?
Use breeder size to set the number, then apply the male-to-female ratio. BFAR’s intensive hatchery module recommends one breeder per square metre for fish weighing 100–250 g, or one breeder per two square metres for fish above 250 g. It recommends a male-to-female ratio of 1:3. FAO reports pond broodstock biomass of 0.2–0.3 kg/m² and says two or three females per male is common.

For example, 100 large breeders at a 1 male:3 female ratio works out to about 25 males and 75 females. This is a starting calculation, not a guarantee that the pond can support that load. Reduce stocking if aeration, water exchange, feed supply, temperature management, or harvesting capacity is limited.
Why breeding-pond numbers do not equal grow-out numbers
Breeding ponds hold selected broodstock to produce fry; grow-out ponds raise fish for harvest. Their stocking recommendations use different measures and should not be substituted for one another. Broodstock guidance is expressed as breeders per area or broodstock biomass. By contrast, UF/IFAS reports 9,500–19,500 fish per hectare for 50 g hybrid tilapia in fed, aerated production ponds. FAO reports normal semi-intensive grow-out yields of 6–8 tonnes per hectare per crop under its described management conditions. Neither figure is a broodstock-pond formula.

What else should determine your pond size?
Drainage and fry collection
Size the pond around the practical work of harvesting, not just the number of breeders. BFAR describes draining and preparing ponds between cycles, removing predators, and collecting fry with fine-mesh nets. FAO says fry collection can begin 10–15 days after stocking; BFAR describes repeated collection before the pond is drained. Make sure the pond shape, outlet, and access allow the whole area to be seined and emptied.
Oxygen, water exchange, and feed
Area and stocking density must fit your capacity to maintain water quality. UF/IFAS’s production-pond figures refer to fed, aerated ponds; FAO notes that higher yields can require continuous aeration and substantial water exchange. FAO gives high-quality broodstock feed at 0.5–2% of body weight daily. A pond that is easy to build but cannot be supplied with sufficient feed, oxygen, or water exchange is not a suitable pond for the intended number of breeders.

Predator control and broodstock separation
Plan how to exclude predators and prevent unwanted fish from entering. Drain and clean between cycles, and keep broodstock lines separated if you need controlled breeding groups. These practices depend on reliable drainage and access, which are reasons to prioritize pond manageability when deciding whether to build one larger pond or several smaller ones.
