House flies are often looking for food, moisture, or the odors of sweat and skin secretions; biting flies may be seeking a blood meal and use cues such as carbon dioxide, odor, movement, and visual contrast to find a host. Which explanation fits depends on what kind of fly is following you.
Why do flies keep landing on people?
“Flies” covers many insects with different diets and host-finding strategies. A house fly is a nonbiting scavenger; a stable fly, horse fly, deer fly, or black fly may bite. A fly circling or landing on you might be investigating moisture or food residue, or it might be a blood-feeding species responding to cues that signal a potential host.
| Fly type | What it may be seeking | Useful clue | Practical first response |
|---|---|---|---|
| House fly | Food, moisture, sweat, skin secretions, or odors from waste and decaying organic material | Does not bite; often active around food, garbage, or animal waste | Remove food and waste sources; use baited traps or sticky fly tape for adults |
| Stable fly | Blood | Can give a painful bite; USDA testing found responses to human hands and breath | Reduce exposure and address breeding material near the area |
| Horse fly or deer fly | A blood host | May be drawn to dark moving objects and carbon dioxide | Reduce exposure outdoors; remove suitable breeding material where practical |
| Black fly | A blood host | Exhaled breath, including carbon dioxide, can strongly affect host attraction | Reduce exposure outdoors; focus on species-appropriate protection |
Attraction and breeding are not the same thing: a fly can visit a person because of an odor or host cue even when its larvae developed somewhere else.
What house flies are really after
House flies (Musca domestica) do not seek human blood. They commonly feed on human and animal food, waste, and other organic material, and may also use moisture and nutrients from a person’s sweat and other body secretions. The University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program notes that house flies readily feed on animal sweat and other body secretions (UC IPM: House Fly).

That can make a sweaty person, food-stained clothes, or residue on skin worth investigating, but it does not mean the fly has singled you out as prey. Nearby garbage, excrement, and warm, moist organic material can also attract adult flies or provide suitable places for larvae to develop. University of Minnesota Extension describes filth flies as associated with human and animal waste and garbage (University of Minnesota Extension: Filth flies).
Why biting flies follow people
Stable flies, horse flies, deer flies, and black flies can use people as blood hosts. Their behavior is different from a house fly’s foraging: a biting fly is seeking a blood meal, not just a damp or food-scented surface. UC IPM identifies stable flies as blood feeders that can inflict painful bites (UC IPM: House Fly).

Host cues vary by species. Carbon dioxide from exhaled breath, body odor, movement, and visual contrast can help some biting flies locate an animal. Wisconsin Extension notes that deer and horse flies are attracted to dark moving objects and carbon dioxide (Wisconsin Extension: Deer Flies and Horse Flies). A USDA study of stable flies found responses to human hands and breath, with attraction to breath increasing as exhalation frequency increased (USDA stable-fly study, indexed on PubMed).
Carbon dioxide matters for some flies—not all
In a study of host-seeking black flies, removing a subject’s exhaled breath reduced attractiveness to about 15% of its original level; replacing the breath with that subject’s carbon dioxide restored attractiveness to about 90% (Black-fly host-cue study, indexed on PubMed). Those results concern black flies. They should not be treated as a general explanation for house flies.

In a house-fly study, researchers found that fly feces and regurgitate attracted foraging flies, while the tested increases in temperature, humidity, and carbon dioxide did not account for the attraction (House-fly “fly factor” study, indexed on PubMed). The useful takeaway is species-specific: carbon dioxide can be an important host cue for some biting flies, while house flies may be responding to food-related and other organic odors.
Why one person may seem to attract more flies
There is no established single “fly magnet” trait that explains encounters with all species. Individual differences in attractiveness have been documented for black flies and are strongly linked to exhaled carbon dioxide in the cited study. For house flies, accessible sweat and skin secretions, food traces, and nearby waste odors are more plausible explanations than a universal personal trait.

In a Live Science report, University of Colorado Boulder entomologist Sammy Ramsey described how human odors form a detectable plume around people; Cornell entomologist Jody Gangloff-Kaufmann discussed carbon dioxide and other human odors as cues for some flies, while noting that house flies may seek nutrients in sweat and skin oils (Live Science: Why flies are attracted to people). These cues do not establish that blood type or one perfume explains why every fly lands on a particular person.

- SUPER STICKY. Our fly ribbon is made with extremely sticky glue that will trap virtually all bugs, making it a great fly paper for indoor home or fly tape outdoor.

- EASY SET UP. HANGING PINS INCLUDED. Roll your fruit fly traps for indoor in your hands to warm up, then pop off the lid and gently unravel the fly trap tape. Each fly sticky trap indoor includes a pin for easy hanging.
- INDOOR OR OUTDOOR. Our indoor fly trap for home also work great as a sticky fly trap outdoor sticky thanks to the waterproof glue. Hang your fly paper roll wherever you like!
- LONG LASTING. Hang your fly paper outdoor for up to 3 months before replacing. The gnat traps for house indoor may need replacing sooner in very dusty environments.
- Remove or seal waste. Secure garbage and promptly clear human or animal waste. Filth flies are associated with these materials, and some can carry contaminants from them (UC IPM: House Fly).
- Clean food and drink residue. Wipe counters, pick up spills, and wash residue from dishes and containers. Check areas where food scraps or organic debris may collect.
- Inspect damp organic material. Look around bins, pet areas, and other places where decaying material may accumulate; investigate unusual fly activity that could point to a hidden source, such as a dead animal.
- Block entry. Repair screens and close gaps around doors and windows to reduce the number of flies entering indoors.
- Use traps for remaining adults. Place baited fly traps or sticky fly tape where flies are active, following the product label. University of Maryland Extension recommends both approaches as adult-fly controls (University of Maryland Extension: Flies).
If the flies are biting outdoors, first distinguish them from nonbiting house flies: the right response depends on the species and whether you are dealing with host-seeking adults or a nearby source supporting their development.
