The “Sword Dragon” is Xiphodracon goldencapensis, a newly described ichthyosaur species from Dorset’s Jurassic Coast. Its nearly complete, roughly three-metre-long skeleton was discovered near Golden Cap in 2001. The animal lived about 190 million years ago, and its unusually long, narrow snout and very large eye socket help make it distinctive.

What is the Sword Dragon?

Xiphodracon goldencapensis was an ichthyosaur: an extinct marine reptile, not a dinosaur. Researchers Dean Lomax, Judy Massare and Erin Maxwell formally described it as a new genus and species in the journal Papers in Palaeontology, more than two decades after its discovery. The University of Bristol called it the first described Early Jurassic ichthyosaur genus from the region in more than a century.

The name “Sword Dragon of Dorset” refers to the animal’s blade-like snout and the traditional “sea dragon” nickname for ichthyosaurs. The scientific name combines Greek xiphos, meaning “sword,” and dracon, meaning “dragon”; goldencapensis refers to Golden Cap, the area where the fossil was found. (University of Bristol; University of Manchester)

Where and when was it found?

Fossil collector Chris Moore discovered the near-complete skeleton near Golden Cap on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast in 2001. The specimen was later acquired by the Royal Ontario Museum in Canada. Lomax recalled first seeing it in 2016; the researchers’ detailed examination eventually established that it represented a previously undescribed species.

The animal lived during the Pliensbachian interval of the Early Jurassic, about 190 million years ago. Ichthyosaur fossils from this interval are comparatively scarce, which makes the skeleton valuable beyond its unusual appearance. (University of Manchester; ITV News Meridian)

What did it look like, and what did it eat?

The ichthyosaur was about three metres long—roughly dolphin-sized. Its long, narrow snout gives rise to the “sword” part of its nickname, while its very large eye socket is another notable feature. Researchers infer that it ate fish and squid. The remains may also preserve traces of its last meal, although that interpretation is presented as a possibility rather than a confirmed identification. Why does this fossil matter?

The Pliensbachian is an under-sampled period for ichthyosaurs and other marine reptiles. Because the Xiphodracon skeleton is unusually complete and preserved in three dimensions, researchers can study its anatomy in detail and use it to improve the evolutionary record for this interval. It also contributes evidence to understanding a complex faunal turnover—the changing mix of species in marine ecosystems.

“This skeleton provides critical information for understanding ichthyosaur evolution, but also contributes to our understanding of what life must have been like in the Jurassic seas of Britain.”

Do skull marks show that another ichthyosaur killed it?

Marks on the skull may be evidence of an attack or bite by a larger ichthyosaur, according to ITV News Meridian’s account of the find. That is a possible interpretation, not a proven cause of death; the marks alone do not establish exactly what happened to the animal.

For background on the reported skull marks and the fossil’s age, see ITV News Meridian.
